The New Slalom Course is Near
It has been part of Ascot Kayak Club for 42 years and produced several champions. Now a bigger better course is being built.
Back in the late 1970s, Fred Vucak and his three sons, Colin, David and Mark, Alan Peters and I erected the first slalom course at Ascot as you can see here.
Note the vegetation on the far river bank.
Several years later the metal poles corroded and needed changing so Lawrence Greed, Ken Sheldrick and helpers replaced the steel poles with timber but used much of the steel by bolting the poles to the timber. Although these poles have been in use for 42 years it will be nice to have new more adaptable slalom course.
Note the vegetation on the far bank.
The slalom course was great for developing skills.
Lets hope we will see a revival in slalom when we get the new course.

Alex also gets in a few flash turns before the course is taken down.
Thursday the barge arrives to take down the slalom course.
The barge is parked up for the night.
Nina Mueller, daughter of Steve who designed the new slalom course looks on.
The metal hangers are down, now for the timbers.
This morning Friday the poles are pulled out of the riverbed.
The pole is then lifted by a crane and placed on the barge.

Handicapped Starts.
Slowest first.
39 paddlers were having a great time trying to beat each other on Tuesday.
Sarah, Ping and Ruj fighting it out.
80 year old Ray Smith leading a bunch.
With 39 paddlers the 1.25 km course can get quite congested.

HIGH SUPPORT STROKE
- When paddling white water, the surf or during canoe polo, the Low Support Stroke may not be sufficient to prevent you from capsizing, and at such times, the High Support Stroke may be required.
- Use the face or drive side of the blade.
- Hold your paddle at shoulder height with your elbows beneath the
shaft.
- Overbalance as if you are about to capsize.
- When the drive face of the blade hits the water surface, drive the boat upwards by using the support of your paddle and applying knee lift and hip flick. Your
paddle blade should be in line or slightly behind your hips.
- Keep your non-working top hand close to your face to avoid dislocating your shoulder.
It's not easy to stop paddling and get a picture of a darter with a fish in its mouth although I see it a lot. The light wasn't good but at least I managed to get a picture.

The White-faced Heron is mostly light blue-grey in colour, with a characteristic white face. In flight, the dark flight feathers of the wing contrast with the paler grey plumage, making this bird easily identifiable when viewed from below. It has a long, slim neck and a pointed grey-black bill. The legs are long and dull yellow in colour. Sexes are similar. When breeding, the birds have long feathers (nuptial plumes) on the head, neck and back. The White-faced Heron has a slow bouncing
flight. Young White-faced Herons are similar in appearance to the non-breeding adults (no nuptial plumes), but are duller, with little or no white on the face. They often have a reddish colour on the underparts.
The White-faced Heron feeds on a wide variety of prey, including fish, insects and amphibians. Food is obtained in a variety of ways, such as walking and disturbing prey, searching among damp crevices or simply standing in the water and watching for movement.
Birds in Backyards
Like the Gen 3 V10, the V9 has been optimized for downwind surfing, with increased rocker, and stability. Flatwater speed is a step up from the V8 Pro due to the slightly narrower beam. This is the boat many paddlers have been waiting their whole lives for – the one that launches you onto the swells, glides
efficiently across the water, and keeps you in the “zone”.
