Avon Training
Bringing back the Past
A CDU group heading down the valley.
For most it was paddling into the unknown.
Jim Bramley, me, Lance Bramley and Peter Hickey.
At Walyunga N/P in high water. After a trip from Posselts Ford.
I think Jim still holds the record for falling off his ski the most times whilst doing a valley trip.
Sad News
The loss of John Gilmore
John Gilmore & Bruce McWhirter at the finish of the Avon Descent 2003.
John and Bruce were regulars on our CDU Avon Training courses.
Photo Bruce McWhirter.
It was so sad to hear that John died last week at the age of 69 years.
John lost his leg some years ago to cancer.
Only a few weeks ago he was having a waterproof prosthetic leg made for him so he could continue paddling and a new kayak was in the wind.
Unfortunately his illness suddenly took a turn for the worst.
John was a true Christian, a judge and a real gentleman.
Our condolences go out to Marcia and her family.
THE HON. JOHN GILMOUR QC
John was born, educated and initially practised law in Scotland. He migrated to Western Australia in 1975 and was called to the Western Australian Bar in 1989. He took silk in Western Australia in 1994, and in Victoria in 1996.
As a Barrister, John was briefed almost exclusively in commercial cases in the Supreme Courts of Western Australia and Victoria, the Federal Court of Australia and the High Court of Australia.
As a Justice of the Federal Court of Australia from 2006–March 2018, John delivered almost 600 judgments.
John was also a judge of the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory, as well as the Supreme Court of Norfolk Island.

Progressive Racing Group
https://www.facebook.com/groups/298821241018279
Tuesday night. Ascot Kayak Club 5.00pm.
29 paddlers took part in the PRG time trial over a 1.25 km course.
Paddlers are handicapped to when they start. The slowest go off first which means most paddlers will come over the finish line at a similar time.
So no one is left behind.
Ross, Isabell and Kate.
Jo and Kate going head to head.
Steve was supposed to be racing, but he can't resist a look at the camera.
A fight is going on with Chris and Sharon on the other side of the river.
It might take a bit of heavy rain to fill the puddles but there are places to paddle in Kalgoolie when it really rains, as Jason Gardner found out.
Fifi prepares lunch.
Fifi and Jason were regular paddlers and organisers at Ascot Kayak Club before work took them away to Kalgoorlie 16 months ago for 3 years.
At every opportunity they try to paddle.
Jason is dying to beat me one day.

Wildlife at Success Hill Reserve, Bassendean
A Night Heron hides among a line of thick trees near Success Hill.
Up to 20 or more can be seen there at certain times of the year.
Mum looks on as two young Darters fidget and make clicking sounds in their nest.
There are a few nests with young birds in near Success Hill.
Both sexes complete the nest, incubate the eggs and raise the young. Chicks are kept warm by brooding continuously (or cooled down by shading with spread wings) for up to a week after hatching and both adults stay in the nest with the chicks overnight. In hot weather, the adults will even shake water over the chicks after a swim. Chicks can swim after about four weeks in the nest and start to fly at about 50 days.
The Darter is usually a solitary bird, forming pairs only while breeding. Breeding is erratic, happening whenever water levels and food supplies are suitable, but most often occurs in spring and summer. Nests are usually solitary, but Darters may nest within loose colonies with other water birds that nest in trees, such as cormorants, spoonbills and ibis. The male decorates a nest-site with green leafy twigs and displays to attract a mate, with elaborate wing-waving and twig-grasping
movements. The male carries most of the nest material to the nest-site, which is normally in the fork of a tree standing in water, usually about 3.5 m above the water's surface.
