It was the worst PADDLING Christmas that I have ever had. Getting cellulitis in my left leg before Christmas ensured that I couldn’t go out paddling, instead I was on the sofa with my leg up watching other paddlers from my window.
It wasn’t that bad though, I feel lucky when you think of all the people around the world having a much tougher time than me.
Three and a half weeks later and still my leg wasn’t completely healed but I knew it was time to get back on the water as my body was curdling, my muscles were turning to jelly and I was missing the river.
So this week I started paddling a few kilometres to get back into it again, but I can’t believe how much fitness I have lost, how much muscle tone I have lost and how much muscle ache I have gained and that’s only paddling 3 to 5 kilometres at a time.
Next week I get some more X-rays done and see a specialist so hopefully I get to know what is happening with it.
So it is best not to get old.
Dolphins back in Bassendean
It was good to see the dolphins at Ascot Kayak Club on Monday night. Luke Dooley shouted out as he was slalom paddling. There were 3 of them heading downstream.
It's good to see them back in Bassendean as it's been a long time since I have seen them way up here.

Paddle WA and Ascot Kayak Club
have organised an exclusive paddlers-only screening to the upcoming Australian film 'Penguin Bloom' starring Naomi Watts, Andrew Lincoln and Jacki Weaver!
This movie has a close connection to the brand new AKC Paracanoe Program, and so it was only fitting to make this a fundraiser for them!
Did you know that Sam Bloom was an Australian Paracanoest at the 2015 ICF Paracanoe World Championships?!

Saturday 23rd January 2021
6.00pm

Sam Bloom was an Australian Paracanoest at the 2015 ICF Paracanoe World Championships.
Penguin Bloom (2021) tells the true story of Sam Bloom (Naomi Watts), a young mother whose world is turned upside down after a near-fatal accident leaves her unable to walk. Sam soon learns how to cope with her disabilities and eventually turns to paracanoeing, where she represented Australia at the 2015 ICF Paracanoe World Championships in Italy!
Down River Training Around the Buoys
This Friday for 6 weeks
Friday from 06:00am - 7.15am
Free. New paddlers welcome.
The FREE training sessions will be held over 6 consecutive Friday mornings at 6am from the 15th of January through until the 19th of February.
These sessions encourage paddlers to test and develop the skills required to race WildWater /DownRiver craft while negotiating an obstacle course of floating buoys.
Traditionally at the end of each training session there is an interval time trial run, with participants being able to see their personal development from week to week.
The skills learnt in these sessions are transferrable to any craft and are also the perfect introduction for anyone who wishes to compete in the upcoming Avon Descent.
Place: Claughton Reserve, Katanning Street, Bayswater.
Time: 6.00am
Boat needed: Best to be in a Wild Water Kayak (DR) or a Wavehopper.
A Finn kayak or similar will be okay.
K1s with rudders are not suitable.
For more details ring Terry on 0417977330 or terry@canoeingdownunder.com.au
19 paddlers took part in this mornings DR around the Buoys Training.
If you would like to join in, but you don't have the experience or a kayak please give me a call and I can organise some training.
The idea is to weave around the buoys in kayaks without rudders in the fastest time.
We held two races after the general training.
Marie Andersson usually paddles a ski with a rudder but for the first time she gave DR Training a go, without a rudder.
This week Marie has taken part in the Progressive Racing Group Training, the Women in Sprint Training and this mornings DR Training.
Simon O'Sullivan usually paddles a ski and a kayak with a rudder, but for the first time he gave DR Training a go. Like most paddlers who paddle a DR kayak or Wavehopper kayak without a rudder for the first time, he had a few steering issues.
Canoe Training
It was good to be able to give Clare Pankhurst a helping hand the other day in the canoe. Clare paddles K1, K2, slalom K1, C1 and slalom C2 and now she is trying her hand in an open canoe so I was able to give her a few tips.
When paddling an open canoe the rear paddler has to keep in time with the front paddler and be able to do an effective J Stroke at the same time, to keep the canoe running in a straight line. The J Stroke can be the most challenging canoe stroke to master.
Clare is a Kayak Instructor and is now practising to become a Canoe Instructor.
I have paddled several thousand kilometres in a canoe, which includes nearly 8 thousand kilometres in Canada.
It is very unusual for me to paddle in the front of a canoe, but it gives Clare a chance to perfect her J Stroke.
If You Want to Paddle an Open Canoe you Need to be able to do a J Stroke
J STROKE
The J stroke can be quite difficult to master and frustrating for the beginner. Nevertheless, it is very important for the stern paddler to persist and perfect the stroke, as it is essential to overcome the turning effect of the canoe. To execute a
J stroke, the blade face must be rotated and pushed or pried away from the boat.
- Reach forward with extended lower arm (as for the forward stroke) and pull the paddle through the water close to the canoe.
- Keep the paddle as vertical as it is possible.
- As the blade comes level with your knees, rotate the top hand so that the thumb points forward/down (the top hand controls the blade angle). A twist of your top hand will angle the drive face of the blade outwards.
- As the stroke is continued beyond your knees, turn the angle of the drive face of the blade by approximately 45 degrees, and pry or push the paddle blade away from the canoe. As the blade grips the water, it will result in the stern of the canoe being pushed away from the blade and bring the canoe on course
again.
- If minimal steering is required, it is only necessary to angle the drive face of the blade outwards and momentarily hold it close to your hip, while your top hand remains at eye level. (This stroke
works well with increased boat speed.)
- Many paddlers use the side of the canoe to assist in the latter part of the J stroke; this will give extra power and leverage to the stroke.
One of the most common mistakes that the stern paddler makes while executing a J stroke, is to lower the top hand across the body and allow the paddle to become horizontal. This causes the blade to lift water or come out of the water and have no turning effect, rather than pushing the water away from the paddle. Keep the paddle almost vertical and in line with the gunwale for the first 2/3rds of the stroke.
We entered the AKC race Wednesday night with Clare at the helm of the canoe.
We did alright.
