I'm back in my kayak again and trying to get my fitness back.
Yesterday I went to see a vascular specialist after having scans/xrays done on Monday. It appears that I have a varicose vein that the blood is flowing the wrong way. This hasn't helped to heal my leg infection so it needs to be sealed. So an operation or a laser operation is needed to sort it out. So that will mean another 2-3 weeks of no paddling when that happens.
I have had varicose veins in my left leg nearly all my life so it's no surprise to me.
(I suppose women haven't noticed my varicose veins as they have always admired my legs!

It's sometimes hard to really appreciate the beauty, the solitude and the pleasure
of a remote paddle until you come home and look back.
I can't be there this year but I still have the great memories.
Paddle to the Inauguration
Barack Obama and wife Michelle were seen paddling to Biden's inauguration.
They started off in the sunny south and ended up reaching the capital city in wintry conditions.
It looks as if Michelle is doing all the hard work as she and Barack Obama enjoy their kayak trip north to the inauguration.
Down River Training Around the Buoys
Friday mornings for 6 weeks
Friday from 06:00am - 7.15am
Free. New paddlers welcome.
Before any session starts, I place 26 buoys along the river bank in both directions. The buoys are placed in a zig-zag pattern so paddlers have to use their skills, boat lean and paddle strokes to get around each one. Some are close together and tight and others are further apart and easier to negotiate.
The Epic GPX kayak is great for putting out the buoys as it is stable, manoeuvrable, and has a big cockpit so I can get about 8-9 buoys in the cockpit at one time to take them out.
A DR kayak with its small cockpit and unstable nature is not suited to this task.

22 paddlers took part in the around the buoys challenge this morning.
Timers me, Doug and Kris Smith.
The FREE training sessions will be held over 6 consecutive Friday mornings at 6am from the 15th of January through until the 19th of February.
These sessions encourage paddlers to test and develop the skills required to race WildWater /DownRiver craft while negotiating an obstacle course of floating buoys.
Traditionally at the end of each training session there is an interval time trial run, with participants being able to see their personal development from week to week.
The skills learnt in these sessions are transferrable to any craft and are also the perfect introduction for anyone who wishes to compete in the upcoming Avon Descent.
Place: Claughton Reserve, Katanning Street, Bayswater.
Time: 6.00am
Boat needed: Best to be in a Wild Water Kayak (DR) or a Wavehopper.
A Finn kayak or similar will be okay.
K1s with rudders are not suitable.
For more details ring Terry on 0417977330 or terry@canoeingdownunder.com.au

John Sullivan Photographer
Anyone who has read this newsletter will have seen lots of John Sullivan's photos.
He is now getting serious about selling them.
John said there are exiting times ahead.
Over the next few days, his first framed prints will be delivered to their new homes to brighten up wall spaces. He said, the process to investigate the commerce options has been time consuming, but in the near future, he will have a new website which will have direct purchasing and delivering available, while supporting a local small business printing company. Stay tuned. I will let you know.
What a beauty.

Getting Wet on the Collie River
Mandurah Paddling Club
It’s been a while since I have paddled the Collie River but a lot of paddlers took advantage of the release a few weeks ago. Some paddlers are heading down there tomorrow.
White water paddlers like myself were quite spoiled some 25 years ago when we could paddle on the amazing Harvey White Water Course and also go to Collie throughout the summer period.
Now Collie is all we have in the summer.
