The Kimberley has some of the fastest tidal currents in the world. The ocean is more like a rapid river 13kms wide rather than an ocean.

talks about slalom
You may not know:
When we get ready for a competition in canoe slalom, we can train on the channel in the lead up to the event, practicing different gate combinations and possible moves, but we don’t know what the race course will be until the day before when they set the gates.
We watch the demonstration runs, but don’t get to actually practice before we race. Instead, we analyse from the bank, review video of the demos, discuss with the coach which lines or options we will take, walk through the course and visualise, and maybe also watch some paddlers racing before us.
Mental preparation is just as important as our physical readiness, and you have to trust your ability and training to piece together the run and get the gates, even if you’ve never done those moves before !
That’s one thing that I love about our sport and what makes it exciting - it’s never the same.
SO! If you’d like to see the @auspaddleteam and the world’s best athletes in action - come check out the international Whitewater Festival at @penrith_whitewater this weekend! It’s also Olympic selection for our boys! I’m excited to race
!

HIGH SUPPORT STROKE
HIGH SUPPORT STROKE
When paddling white water, the surf or during canoe polo, the Low Support Stroke may not be sufficient to prevent you from capsizing, and at such times, the High Support Stroke may be required.
Use the face or drive side of the blade.
Hold your paddle at shoulder height with your elbows beneath the
shaft.
Overbalance as if you are about to capsize.
When the drive face of the blade hits the water surface, drive the boat upwards by using the support of your paddle and applying knee lift and hip flick. Your
paddle blade should be in line or slightly behind your hips.
Keep your non-working top hand close to your face to avoid dislocating your shoulder.
