Last week was probably the most exciting week for Downwind Paddling with several races being organised over the last ten days. There were many high profile world renowned
paddlers taking part, the most successful being Cory Hill.

And a shout out for sponsors, who not only put up the cash, but love the sport for the sake of it.
Total Prize Pool of $100,000 in Cash and Prizes
To add to the already attractive offerings from The Doctor and associated WA events, Shaw and Partners have added an additional sweetener to entice the very best to race over the week. The Shaw and Partners WA Race Week will combine five big events over various distances to find the best Surf Ski Paddler on the Planet. Starting with the Fenn West Coast Downwind, a couple of Sunset Surf Ski Series Races, the
Dash for Cash and wrapping up the week with The Doctor. Points across all 5 events will be accumulated with $35,000 in Bonus Cash and Prizes up for grabs. This promises to be the biggest week of ocean paddling and if WA lives up to its reputation, some of the best downwind racing.

White Water Training at Eildon, Victoria
With little white water in WA in summer WA paddlers have to go over east to train.
Alwyn Duke writes: My son Campbell and I went to Victoria for a Junior Slalom Training Camp [and Vic junior state champs]. An absolutely beautiful course, not difficult , but great for coaching and training. The water is dam released for Hydro and Irrigation from Lake Eildon. [snow melt]. I hadn't previously paddled here, but have paddled on feeders
on the other side of the lake - at Howqua and the Big rivers. Cheers Alwyn

New White Water Parks
WA is Being Left Behind
CONSTRUCTION WORK ON Dublin’s ‘world class’ white-water rafting attraction is expected to get under way next year.
New digital images and videos, being published for the first time this morning by TheJournal.ie, show what the amenity will look like once it’s up and running.
Two weeks ago, councillors gave the green light to the facility to be developed on George’s Dock in the IFSC on a site previously used to host events like Oktoberfest.
The white-water course is designed for use as a tourist attraction and by sports clubs but will also be made available to Dublin Fire Brigade and other emergency services as a training resource. It is expected to draw thousands of visitors on an annual basis.
The team behind Smart Cities, an arm of Dublin City Council which looks at developing Dublin using new and innovative technologies, has produced a 3-D vision of what the white-water rafting course will look like as part of its Smart Docklands project.
The cost of developing the white-water rafting course is estimated to be around €22 million and will be provided through a combination of grants and council funding. It is expected to take up to 18 months to
develop.
The dock, which runs adjacent to EPIC, The Irish Immigration Museum, has been lying unused in recent years. It was previously used to host Christmas markets and Spiegeltent concerts in addition to the annual
Oktoberfest.
Councillors from the area have supported the development with councillor Christy Burke describing its current state as “the ugliest site” and expressing hope that the new facility will bring the area to life.

82 Year Old Paul Chalupsky Takes on the Doctor
Attitude and unmatched fitness paddle SA into record books
Surf-ski achievement in South Africa, and globally, has become synonymous with the Chalupsky name – but nobody could have predicted how long paddling pioneer Paul Chalupsky would keep going. At 82, he’s just completed the famous, gruelling 27km ‘Doctor’ ski-race from Rottnest Island to Sorrento Beach in Australia
– and there are no surf-skiers left alive to even compare his achievement to. The race, off Perth, took place in 25 knot winds and Paul’s spring chicken partner, George Green, 65, seemed to take more strain than his wiry doubles’ partner. There were 96 rowers who finished behind them. The Chalupsky family is star-studded with iron-men, rugby stars and epic, long distance canoeists, Paul having birthed the modern light-weight sea-going canoe whose marketing world-wide has turned him into a
millionaire entrepreneur. As veteran sports writer expat and former Cape Times colleague, Dale Granger whose life-time of covering South African sportsmen and women is richly demonstrated here implies, the Chalpusky’s are a case study in the nature versus nurture sports debate. Is it their incredible DNA or their iron-willed discipline and dedication to their chosen sport that has carried the SA flag so high for so long? Probably a combination of both. – Chris Bateman
