With most of my travelling just about over for a while I'm ready to get back to training and the fact that summer is coming it is just about time that the paddlers who have been hibernating over winter get on the water and enjoy the warmer weather.

Paddlers who want to get fitter or have a go at racing with other paddlers that are not experts you can join our Progressive Racing Group which meets on a Tuesday night at 5.15pm.

If there are paddlers out there who want to learn to paddle a single canoe in Slalom, Wildwater, or Sprint/Marathon I'm happy to put a few sessions together. See below.

World Masters Canoe Marathon - China

Special Edition

Well China turned out being better than I expected. Not just the country but also my paddling. It was a great course with several technical areas that were a challenge to negotiate when there were more than two in a pack. The weather was good although windier on our K2 race.

I really enjoyed my K1 race. I was left behind at the start but fought back and caught up with Ron and Kozubin the Russian paddler later on. Brian the English paddler and last year’s world champion was well ahead so I had to focus on 2^nd and 3^rd place, I didn’t want 4^th place.

With about 1.7 kilometres to go I passed Ron and focussed on Kozubin the Russian who was several boat lengths ahead. I fought hard to get over his washes and catch him up and with 1 kilometre to go I took the lead into the short lap. With a quick sneak peek behind I could see Ron was a little way back which gave me hope.

Kozubin wash rode me around to the turn buoys and then with about 300 metres to go he took off like a Ferrari. I could feel his power beside me but I was determined to keep up, which I did but he was too strong at the end beating me over the line by 1.53 seconds. Although it’s always nice to come 1^st, it was still a fantastic feeling to come 3^rd and even a better feeling to beat Ron who had been stronger than me this year.

Brian, the world champ from the previous year beat me by 1 min 49 secs so I have a little work to do but I was pleased to be so close to the Russian and have beaten Ron by 18 seconds.

Although we were first in the doubles race we had no competition which was disappointing, however if we had gone into a younger category we would have beaten a few doubles.

Shaoxing was clean, it was full of electric scooters, recycling rubbish bins, lots of clean toilets, people friendly, good food and the marathon course was brilliant. Having heaps of WA paddlers there made it a very sociable time. Very few Chinese spoke English so it was a challenge to order food or ask a simple question but it was fun and although China has Human Rights Issues which are very disturbing it is worth a visit.

Do You Want to Learn How To Paddle A Canoe?

It's time for me to get into paddling my high kneeling C1 again.
These boats are the most unstable canoes to paddle. Because you paddle on one side you need to have a proficient 'J Stroke' which is needed for steering.

Anyone interested in giving high kneeling a go or any canoe just let me know.

It is a benefit to paddle a open canoe (C2), a Down River C1 or a Slalom C1 first to learn how to do the J stoke.

The slalom C1 is a great canoe to paddle to learn all the skills and strokes.

Paddlers kneel with their feet behind them and use a single bladed paddle.

The Down River Canoe (Wild Water) is a little more unstable than a slalom C1 but is easier to keep in a straight line. A J stroke is important to keep it going in a straight line. Edging the C1 is also important for help with steering.

An open canoe is probably the best boat to learn how to do the J Stroke. Traditional paddlers will paddle on opposite sides and change over rarely or after several minutes. The rear paddler will be doing a slight J stroke at the end of every power stroke.

Some racing paddlers prefer to 'sit and switch' which means they will paddle on opposite sides but will change sides every 6 or so strokes therefore a J stoke is not needed.

Most canoe paddlers sit in the canoe. Some paddlers will kneel when in white water.

The medals for the Masters Events were quite unique.

They opened like a book.

I'm not a big fan of the new Paddle Australia logo. At first glance I see it as some sort of worm, or something that you might see on a horror movie wriggling inside the body. On a closer you can see the shape of a paddle blade that probably supposed to represent all the paddle disciplines. All the states have the same logo so there are a lot of worms carried on clothing around the nation.

Now this is a logo I like. At least I don't have to guess what sport it represents and it looks good, although admittedly it doesn't depict all the paddle sports.

A reminder that entries close noon this Monday 28 October. A late entry fee will apply thereafter. Racing will kick off at 8am with K1 1000m, 500m and 200m followed by K2's in the same order. GK1 100m, 200m, 500m and GK2 500m also on the program. Please ensure you nominate your K2 partner on the entry form and enter a maximum of 4 races.
