The Championships went off extremely well with some interstate paddlers saying it was the best ever. The key to this success was having Doug Hodson as the chief organiser.

I didn’t particularly like the cold mornings but I coped. WA had some great results and won just about every trophy on offer, although we didn’t win every event. The event attracted 286 entrants, 50 more than the same event in Adelaide last year (and that's not including the novices) and 153 of those paddlers in the main event were from WA. WA paddlers should be proud to have participated and the organisers and volunteers should pat themselves on the back for delivering a well organised championships.

Here are some of the volunteers who happened to be around at the time of the photo. Many others were not around at the time.

Doug was able to muster up around 80 volunteers. Just to build the ramps there must have been 20 people that gave Tom a hand in one way and another. On the Wednesday before the race there must have been another 20 getting the venue ready and during the event there must have been another 50 or 60. It was great to see so many paddlers and non-paddlers giving up their time to ensure the championships went off as smoothly as it could.

There were lots of paddlers that did WA proud but Josh Kippin stood out being the most important winning the open K1 and securing a place in the Australian Team. His K2 race with Jesse Philips didn’t quite go as planned. Although leading they lost the lead after having rudder cable troubles so at one stage with only two laps to go they had to stop which put them back into 5^th or 6^th place. However they managed to peg back the field overtaking all teams except Hamish Young and Isaac Johnson from Victoria who won the race.

The novice race was a great success with 24 paddlers taking part. The paddlers loved being part of such a great event.

The first couple of laps the race was tight with Josh and Jesse leading. Hamish Young and Isaac Johnson in the white kayak eventually won with Josh and Jesse coming second after having rudder problems.
