Last weeks State Marathon Championships was a huge success and a good guide to how the Australian Canoe Championships will operate on the 18th and 19th May. Hopefully there will be more paddlers entering from WA and with all the paddlers coming from the east it will be a big show. Well done Doug and team for the organisation and Tom
Rogan and team who built the ramps.
It was also good to see a good number of paddlers staying back to put a section of the ramp away after competing in the event.
The ramps have to be dismantled this Saturday and volunteers are needed.
It was also great to see many new faces who have been around a while give the marathon ago as well as several juniors, many who had competed at the Sprint Nationals. I was pretty impressed with Jane Pankhurst who had done a limited amount of paddling but took part as an open female and had the longest distance for a lady to paddle. We are certainly
short of female paddlers in the open ladies? Even in the 35+ ladies there was only Amanda Bowman.
The most number of paddlers came from the 45, 55 and 65+ sections and we had several above 70 year olds as well. Most have less family commitments than the younger paddlers.
There were 11 females and 7 males enter the novice section on Sunday which was good to see. They were very enthusiastic and really enjoyed the 7.8km race.
The Australian & Oceania Canoe Marathon Championships will be held at Ascot Kayak Club
from the 16th-19th May 2019.
So why not be in it. It's not how fast you go it's the participation that counts.
