On Saturday at the Paddle WA AGM
I joined nine other West Australians nominated for the prestigious Hall of Fame Award. The Hall of Fame represents the highest level of achievement. Luckily for me it didn’t just include paddlers at an Olympic level, although six of the paddlers nominated were Olympians. I was expecting one winner from the nominations but to my delight all ten nominations were recognised, all being worthy candidates in this inaugural year.
Two years ago I became an Avon
Descent Legend, which was a great honour, now to be a Hall of Fame candidate it can’t get much better than that.

I love paddling and the people
who paddle. It has been my life and what a life I have had.
As a teenager and in my early
20s I hitch hiked and travelled cheaply to 38 countries and at that time I didn’t think I would ever find anything more satisfying and rewarding as travelling. Living out of a backpack was my life and I loved it. Then I found paddling and I suddenly realised that there was a more rewarding, more satisfying way of life. And not only that I could combine my travelling bug with paddling and explore the world by the way of the path of the paddle.
The other
recipients are: Ramon Andersson, Robin Bell, Bevan Dashwood, Kelvin Graham, Zlatan Ibrahimbegovic, Sandy Robson, Lisa Rush (Oldenhoff), Amanda Simper and Ken Vidler.
The recipients: Lisa Rush (Oldenhoff), Sandy Robson, Zlatan Ibrahimbegovic and Robin Bell couldn't attend so friends and relatives received their award for them.
It was over 44 years ago when I started paddling and it's taken me to some beautiful, impressive places around the world, kept me fit, and given me some exciting racing.
Running repairs at the London Bridge before it collapsed.
Back in 1974 a friend and I drove around Australia with two kayaks on the roof. We paddled on virtually every piece of water we stopped near. We paddled some of the biggest rapids, on the Tully River, the Barron River, the Lake Argyle Spillway and many other river rapids and ocean crossings. Back then I didn't really know the techniques and kayaking
skills but its amazing the things we tackled which I probably would think twice today.

Clint Robinson and Tom Norton
after finishing the Doctor Race
Sponsored by Shaw and Partners
Having seen Clint Robinson coach
last week I could see that he is certainly in contact with the best coaching techniques. What the paddlers on that coaching course didn’t realise was how good, how fit Clint still is. Last Saturday at the Doctor Race from Rottnest to Sorrento Clint (46 years old) came third. What a great result and after 27 kilometres he was only 29 seconds behind the invincible Cory Hill and 10 seconds behind Mackenzie Maynard. Clint represented Australia at 5 Olympic
Games.

Jesse Phillips and Steve Bird first in the double ski.
The paddlers were like ants arriving at the finish line.
Boat handlers had a busy job lifting the skis from the water.
David Ahmed lifting other peoples skis from the water after he had paddled in the race.
David was once a West Australian who used to paddle Wild Water kayaks but moved to Cairns to live some years ago. He visits his family in WA fairly regular.
It was good to catch up with him.
Paddlers run from the water up to the finish line.
The fastest male paddlers. $10,000 for the winner.

Help Hunter Get to the Championships
Hunter's mum Beck is baking Christmas cakes as a fundraiser:
Hunter has been training incredibly hard again this year with his sights set firmly on competing at the Australian Junior Canoe Slalom Championships in Eildon, Victoria in January 2019. As you can imagine it is not a cheap excercise for us to get him there so this year I am baking Christmas Cakes to help offset
some of his travel costs. These hand crafted Reindeer or Santa Christmas Cakes (approx 500gm) are selling for $17.00 each and come beautifully packaged in clear acetate boxes. They make excellent gifts for family, friends, teachers or that tricky secret Santa gift! If you would like to purchase one (two or even more) to help Hunter achieve is dreams please let me know.
