Well it's been a big week for training and racing. Last week was the Collie Multisport Race and on Sunday the Island to Island Race at Ascot was held. Conditions looked pretty good at Collie, mirror like on the water, but it wasn't so calm for the Island to Island race where some paddlers struggled against the
wind.
Matta Coutts and Luke Dooley fighting it out in the kayak leg.
Baillie Liddle seems to be a popular lady.
Canning River Paddlers Noah and Morgan Boldy teamed up with Chad and Tom.

Sea Kayak Festival 2019February 22, 2019The 2019 event will take place in the beautiful south-west corner of our state. A sea kayaker festival base-camp will be set up
overlooking the sheltered waters of Geographe Bay at Camp Grace (approx. 10km from Busselton). The base-camp is close to plenty of excellent paddling sites on the capes, with opportunity for paddlers of all levels to challenge themselves and enjoy learning about the many dimensions of sea kayaking. The weekend will feature an exciting array of on and off water activities, daily kayaking trips, opportunities to learn new skills, the chance to learn from some of the worlds most experienced
paddlers, and wonderful paddling in one of WA’s premier coastal areas. For instructors and guides, this is a great opportunity for participating in professional learning.

Olympian Clint Robinson is coming over for the Doctor Race.
Clint will have time on the Wednesday afternoon/evening to do a 1- 2 hour coaching course. This will be conducted around the Ascot/Sandy Beach area and
it will not only be an opportunity to meet a great Olympian but would be of great value to paddlers wanting to develop a better technique.
He is also happy to run a one-on-one or one-on two coaching course on the ocean on the Thursday morning.
Anyone interested please let me know.
Saturday Morning Dash
If you want to get into some fun racing and training this is a very good place to give it a go.
This week there is a 10km time trial and a 6km time trial for paddlers wanting to do a shorter course.
Paddlers line up for a 7.30am start at Sandy Beach. |
Over 30 paddlers took part in the Saturday morning 4km dash last Saturday. We even had a K4 (Kris, Steve, Mark & Hugh) which seemed to be going well on the straights but didn’t perform quite as well on the turns. We also had a K3 with two beautiful ladies Anne and Nicky in the two front seats and the less attractive
Steve Coffee who was stirring them on in the rear.
Mike & Peter Liddle did the fastest time in the K2 with Thomas Rogan being the first in the singles. For some reason there were 4 capsizes and it wasn’t even rough. We had a newcomer Alex race for the first time who did very well and it wasn’t him who capsized.
Doug paddled his new Bettong Kayak and Peter Gigengack who usually paddles a
V12 or DR kayak in season tried Tom's fast K1. Ron was back in his K1 for the first time since the World Masters. There was a good fight between Simon and Matt, Simon taking a better second turn and beating Matt by a second or two. Young Ray Smith paddled with the mature Ray Smith in a double ski and were getting in-tune for tomorrow's race.
Mark Lawson was on hand to go through some start techniques on and off the water so paddlers got a good
workout. Some regular paddlers didn’t turn up, they were probably resting for tomorrow’s race.
It was Maya’s birthday so she treated us to home-made cake. There was no mention of her age but she is definitely over 21. Doug brought the coffee and Ray brought his usual cake contribution, the weather was good although the flies have started to annoy.
This week there is a 10km time trial and a 6km time trial for paddlers wanting to do a shorter course.
Slower paddlers go off first.
There is a training session on Monday nights for any paddler wanting to join in member or non-member.

Tuesday Night at Ascot
Ascot Kayak Club has a few different training sessions happening and apart from the elite session the other

The Epic V7 sets a new standard for rotomold performance. It is relatively lightweight, extremely efficient, extremely comfortable, fast for a plastic ski and easy to handle. The V7 is outfitted with the same high quality fittings as every surf ski in the Epic lineup, including our carbon fibre foot-board and pedals and the hugely popular Epic designed bailer. In addition, it features an aft storage compartment with a waterproof
hatch that puts the V7 in a class of its own. It offers
similar stability to the V8 with the increased durability of a polyethylene kayak. Its capability can be further enhanced with the optional kick up rudder (no modification needed). This combination allows the V7 to be paddled in areas where composites cannot.
SPECIFICATIONS Length: 5.20m (17') Width: 54cm) Capacity:135kg Storage Capacity: 42L Paddler Fit: 4'9" to 6'7" (1.45m to 2.01m) Weight: 24 kg
Island to Island Race
The weather looked good inside the Ascot Kayak shed but outside and around the corner on the straight up to
Bayswater the river conditions were very testing. Paddlers were happier when they turned and headed home.
Josh Kippin was the overall K1 winner with Luke Dooley 2nd and Ramon Anderson 3rd.
The winner of the K4 was the Bayswater crew of Kobe/Matthew/Brett/ and
Nicholas.
