Last year at this time I was paddling across Canada and escaping WAs cold, wet weather, although at times our winter was as good as a Canadian summer. The recent rain in WA and increased river levels have certainly got a few paddlers excited and are taking advantage of the whitewater with trips down the Avon Valley.

Don't forget the Northam to Toodyay race on Sunday.

If you haven't been to Bells Rapid on a weekend it's now hard to get a parking spot as it is becoming very popular with picnickers.

Canoeing Down Under is donating this Double Guppy worth $1550.00 to the junior Avon as a club prize.

I did a few paddles with Mark and Charmaine last week. As first time Avon Descenters they were keen to get in some whitewater training in.

After a successful Toodyay T tree run. The T trees have really changed over the years and getting easier every year which is a pity for those paddlers who know them well.

Getting Ready for Portugal

Whilst most paddlers are getting ready for the Avon Descent, Mark Lawson is training hard for the World Masters Canoe Marathon Championships. Now being in the 60 year age group Mark still has to portage and he's pretty good at it. Running is part of his training whereas when you are my age over 65 paddlers don't have to portage.

In most of the Australian and overseas portages they are run in an anti-clockwise direction. This year in Portagul they are paddling and portaging in a clockwise direction so Mark is getting used to portaging in that direction.

Please sort out own transport to and from start/finish line, as no service will be provided.

The Course- 30km

The race starts 500 metres above Northam Weir and winds it ways downstream through channels covering the opening stages of Day 1 of the famous Avon Descent Race.

From the Northam Weir to Katrine Bridge the river is characterised by flat water and intermittent deep pools. Two kilometres downriver from Katrine is Glen Avon Rapid, a small but tricky rapid. After seven kilometres of coffee rock, Sinclair’s Crossing underneath Dumbarton Bridge presents a challenge with many channels that exist even in low water. Not far downriver is Extracts Weir which is a compulsory portage in this race. The river from Extracts to Toodyay can be shallow with a gravely bed.
