Back in 2011 when I was 60 years old my aim was to paddle 6000 kms in my sixtieth year which I did. I never thought I would repeat that amount of kms in one year but this, my 66^th year (I’ve just turned 67) I have paddled 6600kms which I started by paddling 2800kms in a heavy fully laden sea kayak across Canada. Every week since then (except a couple) I have paddled 100 -120kms a week.

Can’t wait for my 70^th year.

Wild Water Racing

With the Avon flowing a little it's time to stop competing on flat water and move to the running water.

Luke was the winner of the Ascot buoys race.

Dave Worthy was the winner of the Upper Swan T Tree race two weeks ago beating Luke.

Baillie was the winner in the women's race two weeks ago.

After the biggest turn out at the last WW race, 51 boats, the WWR #3 will be raced on the same course.

Syds Rapid in High Water

This photo is of Syds Rapid but on the far right side of the river. It can only be paddled in high water. It's a bit of a struggle getting through a thick group of T trees at the top. Then you have to avoid the trees as the power of the water is very fast.

The 515 Avon Challenge Is On

I was hoping for an easier Avon Decent this year but it looks as if its going to be harder now Rob Jarrett has ask me to paddle with him in a 515, which is a heavy slower craft than most boats. But we are not the only silly buggers to paddle the 515, Chris and Tam Watson above and Jason and Fifi below are also paddling 515s so it's going to be a great race between the 3 boats. Any others out there giving the 515 a go?

In the 10km race last Saturday Rob and I just beat Chris and Tam but Tam is much younger and has youth on his side to get faster in the next month.
Fifi is trying to get Jason to paddle harder so she can relax more.

Free Kayaks Given to Bayswater and Canning Clubs

Three weeks ago I gave away 8 of my teaching kayaks. Two clubs snapped them up. Both clubs wanted kayaks to teach the basic strokes to their members.
Now they have the opportunity.

Knowing all the skills and different strokes is extremely important to all paddlers no matter which discipline they take up.

We all need to start from the bottom and work up.

I know many experienced racing paddlers who can't paddler a maneuverable kayak.

If you haven't paddled one of these kayaks - give them a go.

My Treasured Nordkapp Given Away

Back in 1981 I made a Nordkapp Kayak for my first 100 day solo Kimberley Expedition. I already had a professionally made Nordkapp but I wanted a stronger one so I built one extra strong, but it was really heavy. That kayak has been in some amazing places, it has been hit by sharks, chased by crocodiles, dragged across mud, sand, rocks and reef. It has crossed huge boils, whirlpools and fought through rough seas. It spent a year around the Kimberley coast and to top it off it was buried at Mitchell Plateau for over six months. That Nordkapp kayak gave me so much pleasure, took me to so many places and stood the battering that the harsh Kimberley conditions gave out. It was a big part of my life.

I haven't used it for years, but it was such an important part of my past so it was hard to get rid of it. But after 37 years I felt it time to part with it so a few months ago I gave it away to John Snowball a very experienced paddler.

It was good to see it go to a good home. It was probably 35 or more kilograms so I could understand if it ended up in the rubbish tip but recently John with 4 other experienced paddlers paddled it to Rottnest at night.

This Nordkapp kayak took me to so many places and stood up to some rough treatment.

Now, after 37 years it has a new owner

Hi Terry,

I paddled your seakayak on my first decent trip since getting it from you. A night paddle to Rottnest, I know !! only a short trip compared to its trip history but I think it loved being back in the ocean and seems to holds it's own against the more modern boats being paddled by the others in the group. Was surprised to find the electric bilge pump still worked. Have paddled without rudder so far as it's not difficult keeping on course even when surfing wind waves.

Anyway a great night trip to Rotto being a first for all 5 of us. Had yacht at Rotto waiting to ferry us back. Yeah I suspect a seasoned seakayaker would have paddled home !! But I was very happy to get a lift back. I'm not as tough as it's previous owner!!

It paddled through the famous Horizontal Falls.

It was dragged over mud, sand, rocks and exposed reef.

It's been where Captain King, on the Mermaid had been in 1820.

It was buried for 6 months.

Two Gold for Jessica Fox

CANOE/KAYAK: Paddle Australia’s Jessica Fox brought up a winning double on the final day of the ICF Canoe Slalom World Cup in Liptovsky Mikulas, Slovakia (22 – 24 June 2018).

Fox (NSW) could not have been more impressive in the women’s C1 final on Sunday, blowing away the field to win by more than seven seconds in cold and wet conditions.

Her final time was an error-free 106.34, with Czech Tereza Fiserova finishing second in 113.96. Great Britain’s current world champion, Mallory Franklin, finished third.

Already on Saturday, Fox had started the new 2018 ICF Canoe Slalom season in the same way she finished the 2017 season – on top of the women’s K1 podium.

Fox qualified fastest in the morning’s semi-final, and then held her nerve as the final competitor in the final to post a time of 101.20. The reigning K1 World Champion finished almost two seconds faster than Austria’s Corinna Kuhnle, with Germany’s Ricarda Funk third.

“I’m really pleased with my K1 races, second in the heats, first in the semis, and then to back that up with a win is awesome,” Fox said.

“It’s always tough the first race of the season. Our last competition was the Australian Open, the Europeans have had their Championships, so you know the levels been up.

“There’s pressure, but there’s also this expectation that I put on myself. I had a great season last year, and I want to match that, I want to better that, I want to keep improving on that.”

After Sunday’s C1 gold medal run the dual Olympic medallist said she was inspired by the noise of the slalom fans as she made her way down the Liptovsky course.

“I could hear it at the start, I could hear it in the middle, I could hear the Aussies and the crowd,” she said.

“It was such an awesome run. To be able to back up after yesterday, it takes it out of you physically and mentally and emotionally, so I’m really pleased with that final.”

Jessica has dominated C1 events in recent years and will be a short-priced favourite to win gold when the discipline makes its Olympic debut in Tokyo in 2020.

“When I got into that final with a solid run, I just really wanted to charge it and attack it,” Fox said.

“I fixed the errors I made in the first run, and I was really pleased and very surprised by that time in the finish. I think the field is growing every year, and the girls are very competitive.”

Fox has a trophy cabinet full of World Cup and World Championship gold medals, along with an Olympic silver and bronze medal.

In other Australian results, Noemie Fox (NSW) finished in seventh place in the women’s C1 final, after qualifying in third place in the semi-final.

Ros Lawrence (NSW) finished in 20th place, while in the men’s K1, Timothy Anderson (VIC) finished the semi-final in 25th place and Daniel Watkins (TAS) 37th.

The second 2018 ICF Canoe Slalom World Cup begins in Krakow, Poland, on Friday (29 June).

The Course- 30km

The race starts 500 metres above Northam Weir and winds it ways downstream through channels covering the opening stages of Day 1 of the famous Avon Descent Race.

From the Northam Weir to Katrine Bridge the river is characterised by flat water and intermittent deep pools. Two kilometres downriver from Katrine is Glen Avon Rapid, a small but tricky rapid. After seven kilometres of coffee rock, Sinclair’s Crossing underneath Dumbarton Bridge presents a challenge with many channels that exist even in low water. Not far downriver is Extracts Weir which is a compulsory portage in this race. The river from Extracts to Toodyay can be shallow with a gravely bed.
