Down River Around The Buoys

Last Tuesday saw the first of the 3 evening races which are staged at different venues. Set at Sandy Beach Reserve the course was pretty long, less difficult turns than usual which allowed paddlers to go faster. Michael Liddle was first with his best time being 7.03, Peter Liddle second 7.05 and me third 7.20. The Wavehopper class was won by Jason 8.03, Charmaine second 8.24 and John Breed 3rd 8.26.

Next Tuesday 13th February the race will be at Point Reserve, Bassendean at 5.30pm. It will be a little tighter, testing course with enough long runs to make up speed should the tighter turns slow you down.

We only have one Friday morning session left (16th Feb) this season and two Tuesday evening races so join us before the season finishes.

 Sculling For Support
can you do it

SCULLING FOR SUPPORT
If you are a white water enthusiast and plan to side-surf big stoppers, it is advisable to practise 'sculling for support' on flat water first. The objective of 'sculling for support' is to stay balanced by maintaining the blade's movement across the water surface, while edging the kayak towards the sculling side.

Best to be snug in your kayak - and use your knees and thighs for better balance and control.
  • Use the face (front) side of the blade.
  • Overbalance your boat towards the nominated sculling side.
  • With the leading edge of the blade raised slightly, scull across the water surface to and fro. Use your wrists to adjust the blade angle. The raised leading edge is helpful in assisting the paddle to track the surface and preventing the blade from slicing too far downwards.

I think it's been about 35 years since I last saw 16 year old Arron Darcy but on Sunday our paths crossed at the Rose & Crown at Guildford. I often wondered what happened to him so it was great to see him again.

Arron is now married, has two children and a plumbing business employing 10 people.

Arron was one of the juniors that I used to coach and take white water paddling. He was also one of the young paddlers that were lucky enough to paddle the Harvey White water Course.

It's always good to meet people from the past and get to know what they are doing now.
