I had thought I might enter the WA Sprint Championships next week to make up the numbers but when I went to enter and read that:

Each paddler must nominate a volunteer - No Volunteer, No Paddle.
Please note at this regatta there will be no option for self volunteer.

I think I might give it a miss.

I don't mind volunteering, I'm a life member of Ascot Kayak Club and Paddle WA  and to get a life membership there was a lot of volunteering. But to find a volunteer so I can paddle is a little more tricky.

I find it strange that only a few weeks ago Sprint were asking for more mature paddlers to take part in the Sprint Regattas and several mature paddlers who don't usually paddle sprint gave the last regatta a go.

I can understand that there are a lot of volunteer positions to fill for a championship but surely there are dozens of young paddlers with dads and mums that can fill most of those positions so the more mature paddlers who have done their bit for the sport can enter without feeling pressured.

Surely the No Volunteer, No Paddle rule discourages the more mature paddlers to take part.

With the Mandurah Duel being on the same day I think Sprint is going to miss out.

The Down River summer season started this morning with 12 paddlers taking part. With several other early morning training squads on the river it was a good number for a 6.00am session.

It was also good to see Ryan Goodchild taking part. Ryan used to be a regular Ascot paddler but hasn't been seen on the river for a few years after marriage and a couple of children. Now he's back to getting fit.

I was impressed with Luke Walkemeyer and Charmaine Turnbull who for the first time paddled a wavehopper and did extremely well to steer their kayaks around the twisty buoy course without too much problem.

We will be having longer races on a Tuesday evening very soon.
The group having practised for 45 minutes and now ready for a short race.

Training For the WA & Australia Marathon Championships

This year there seems to be a bigger number of WA paddlers thinking of going to the Australia Marathon Championships in South Australia. You don't have to be a gun to enter, that's why I'm going.

There are several age divisions and there are races for skis if you don't paddle a kayak. K1 paddlers over 60 and ski paddlers don't have to portage.

You might want to consider taking part.
I don't think Michael Liddle is thinking of competing at the Australian Marathon Championships but he was giving his sister Baillee, who is going, a few tips of the fastest way to get in and out of a kayak at the portage points.
Baillee Liddle testing her stand up and get out whilst the kayak is still on the move.  Congratulations Will and Baillee on your engagement.
Baillee getting some extra tips from the best marathon paddler in Australia, Josh Kippin.

A 16,000km Kayak, Backpack & Cycle Across the USA
A few years after kayaking, walking and cycling 24,000kms around Australia I thought it was time to do the same around the USA, but this time I did 16,000kms self-supported.

The challenge was to paddle 4,130kms, backpack 1100kms and cycle 10,770kms carrying all my camping gear. Sending a bicycle, my backpacking gear and a 6 metre kayak from one place to another did have its challenges but where there was a will there was a way.

This amazing journey took me 7 months to complete. If you would like to read 3 sections of that trip go here:
