We Are Back
This 550th newsletter has been a long time coming. Just before I left for Canada I had the 550th newsletter ready to go but my server got updated and my website and newsletter being quite old wouldn't then connect to the server so I've been out of a website and newsletter for 4 months.

But now I think Alaine might have solved the problem with the newsletter at least so hopefully we are back in business again. I just have to find the best newsletter template to use.

Congratulations
 Bonnie & Craig

Across Canada
Most of you will know by now that John Breed and I are back from the waterways of Canada. I returned to Canada in July to complete the 6350km journey across Canada that I started some years ago. To complete the journey John and I only had to paddle 2750kms.

It all started in 2011 in the Canadian Rockies between Banff and Jasper when I headed east towards Montreal and New York City in the US. Due to time restraints the journey was broken up into two stages, the first stage being from the Canadian Rockies and finishing at Rossport in Lake Superior.

This first stage was 3600kms, 2600kms of that I did solo and 1000kms with Alaine Davin and Leonie Cockman. On this stage I paddled on 8 rivers (some up, some down), crossed watersheds, paddled 54 lakes, and had to portage 40 times, from 50m to 20kms in length.

The second and more recent stage was 2750kms from Rossport in Lake Superior to New York City in the US. On this stage John Breed and I paddled on 9 rivers (some up, some down), crossed watersheds, paddled 32 lakes (including the biggest in the world, Lake Superior) as well as paddling through 120 locks.

We were on the water for 66 days pushing kayaks with 70-80 kgs of gear inside paddling from 6 - 12 hours a day.

It was most pleasing to be able to paddle every day for 66 days at 66 years old without feeling any soreness or stiffness.

This was certainly a wilderness journey with a difference, which shone in beauty and was in parts mixed with tinges of civilisation.

For a brief account of the more recent expedition go here: https://terrybolland.com/across-canada-2017-part-4-short-overview/
I paddled an Epic 18X
It might look like a short journey but Canada is pretty big

More photos on my facebook

https://www.facebook.com/canoeingdownunder/
I have paddled 22,000kms in North America.

I have also cycled 10,500kms and backpacked over 1200kms

One of the big things we noticed whilst paddling in Canada was the fact that the speed boats will go full speed when there is no speed limit but once there is a '5 knot restriction' or a 'no wake zone' they slow right down to the noted speed limit. Lots of those speed restrictions are in places far from police but they still slow down and take notice of the signs.

Here in Perth it seems to be open slather. Only one in every three boats seem to take notice of the 5 knot speed limit. Most have no regard for other water users or swimmers or the erosion of the river banks.

Until there is a crack down and the authorities start to police the Swan River in the speed zones it will just keep happening. There is a reason why a speed zone is in place. So why isn't it policed?

If you want to report a speeding vessel go here:

Congratulations to Sandy Robson
Australian Geographic's Adventurer of the Year.
Sandy has been nominated for World Paddle Awards Sportswoman of the Year.

You must admit there is nothing better than paddling on a river, ocean or lake, unless you like sex, food or five star travel but they are trivial things. So why not give an Epic ski or a Grafton Paddle Sports kayak ago.

Epic V8pro

The Epic V8 Pro is the perfect boat for those who want a performance upgrade from our popular V8. The V8 Pro adds 30cm of length and takes nearly 4 cm off of the width, creating a surfski that is livelier and faster. In terms of speed and stability, the V8 Pro fits perfectly between the Epic V8 and the V10 Sport.

The V8 Pro includes the same great outfitting features of the V8, including the bow, stern and centre carry handles, water bottle holder, and the patented Epic bailer. The V8 Pro will fit paddlers from 4’10” to 6’5” in height. The reduced hump under the knees will be appreciated by smaller paddlers. Taller paddlers between 6’5” and 6’7” will be better suited in the V8 or V10 Sport.

Specifications:

Length: 5.79 m
Width: 55.8 cm
Depth: 32.0 cm

There is a lot happening if you want to keep fit. Around Bassendean / Bayswater area alone paddlers are training virtually every morning and evening.

For paddlers not in a club you are welcome to join the old CDU Saturday morning training session 7.15am at Sandy Beach (although this week we meet at Claughton Reserve due to rowers) and the Monday night group that now train at Ascot Kayak club at 5.45pm.

If you want to join a club Ascot Kayak Club have different groups out on a Tuesday night at 5.00pm and Ascot also have a race for members on a Wednesday night at 6.00pm. On Thursday it's circuits at Ascot at 5.00pm. Then Ascot have early morning coaching Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Ascot and Swan Canoe Club have a great slalom training program which attracts a lot of younger paddlers and Ascot also have a junior paddling program.

Other clubs have training nights Canning on a Tuesday and Swan on a Tuesday but I'm not so familiar with all their programs. The Downwind guys are now in full swing if you like ocean ski paddling. The Sea Kayak Club has lots of programs and paddles.

Then there are all the different races at the weekends. See calendar below.
