Most paddlers were putting a lot of effort
into their paddling.

but one paddler looked as if he was just happy
to be there! Who would that be?

Mark Lawson, Wayne Martin, Terry Bolland,
Dave Worthy, Patrick Irwin and Peter Liddle.

****************************************************************

It was a big weekend of racing. It started off with the Saturday
morning 4km race at Sandy Beach. I paddled with young Luke
Dooley in a K2 and we were the first over the line by a long
way 1 min 1 sec. Unlike a lot of double pairs we didn't lean
to one side which made Luke happy. Our turn around the spit
post wasn't that great though. I think we were going so fast
or Luke just forgot that the K2 didn't come around like a
K1 we ended up going so wide we could have parked a double
decker bus between the post and our turn. We lost a few seconds
here but the second turn was much better and we paddled home
strongly and when the times were read out and we had paddled
it in a time of 18 minutes 44 seconds, the 6th fastest time
by a double or single kayak this season, Luke said he didn't
expect to do such a fast time with little old me in
the back!!

At midday a group of 47 DR paddlers gathered at Ascot Kayak
Club to compete in the DR Bouys Race. It's one of my favourite
races as it combines, fitness and skill. I have missed this
race other years as I have always been working so it was great
to take part this year and come 9th amongst a lot of much
younger paddlers. Dave Worthy took out 1st place, with Luke
Dooley being 2nd and Wayne Martin 3rd.

On Sunday, the Paddle Classic was a much longer race, in
fact 18kms. I wasn't at all confident that I would have a
good start with 80 paddlers going off together but by keeping
to the left of the river and avoiding most of the wash I had
a clean run although I was still further back in the field
than I wanted to be so I had some catching up to do. Once
I had got beyond the 500 metre mark and started to settle
in I started catching and overtaking paddlers. One by one
I paddled by and when I paddled passed Ron Clarke another
older paddler who is usually faster than me I was feeling
pretty good. By the time I reached Guildford Bridge I had
caught up with a bunch of paddlers led by Warren Southwell.
I had tired myself out by then in the pursuit of the group
so I settled in and started wash hanging at the back. The
line was 4 long on one side and 3 on the other. I was number
4 behind Andy Hewlett who nearing Garratt Road started to
drop back and lose the pack so I had no choice but to pass
him and latch onto the pack again. That was a good feeling
as Andy has always been faster than me. With about 3 kilometres
to go I made my move passing Tricia Gilbert and joining up
with Michael Laloli, Simon O'Sullivan, Amanda Bowman and Warren
Southwell. I was on the outside and on the left of the group
which started moving to the left and forcing me towards the
shallows. I didn't want to be pushed too far so I made a move
and sprinted ahead which split the pack leaving Amanda, Warren
and me to fight out the last 2kms. We see-sawed through Ascot
Waters with Warren managing to enter the main river in front.
I don't think I have beaten Warren in the last five years
and it seemed that today was no different. Amanda and I were
fighting it out and although I was happy to let Warren lead
us in, just before the bridge I changed my mind and went for
it. I left Amanda and caught up with Warren's wash and then
made a dash across his wash to get level. Then the fight was
really on and lucky for me I beat him by a second. He was
paddling his plastic ski however but a win is a win and I
ended up being 10th K1 and the 19th single (including skis)
across the line.

So I ended up having a 1st, a 9th and a 10th. Luke ended
up having a 1st, a 2nd and a third.

Stories

WW Buoys Race

The WW Buoys Race was very well attended
with 47 DR racers taking part. It was good to see several
new faces, mainly young slalom paddlers who are now giving
DR a go. Slalom paddlers usually have the skill they just
need to adapt to a DR kayak and the fact it is a much longer
race.

Josh Kippin started off as a slalom
paddler. He represented Australia in slalom, he then took
up DR and went to the top of DR in WA and then he moved into
Marathon and went to the top of that discipline. One year
he held the Slalom, Wild Water and State Marathon Titles.

Dave Worthy again showed his speed and
skill by winning the event.

Baillie Liddle was the fastest female.

Peter Gigengack was the first Wavehopper.

Jane Liddle was the first female Wavehopper.

Luke Dooley was the most improved, coming
second.

Patrick Irwin was the most relaxed.

Cameron Vogel did an impressive roll
on his first run when he ran smack into a pole and capsized.

It was another well organised race thanks
to Alan Moreby and other volunteers

Brody Coulter in his
first DR race.

Clare Pankhurst taking
on the dreaded poles. It's not easy to go around every pole
at a high speed.

Jane Liddle in a fighting
mood. She won the Wavehopper female class. We hope to see
her in a DR soon.

Dave Worthy looking serious
and he was, he won

Terry Bolland looking
serious and he was, he came 9th.

Bonnie with such a better
look.
