Just as the WA Sprint Olympic Hopes junior paddlers have
left for Europe, the WA slalom paddlers competing at World
Cups in Europe are returning home with an enormous amount
of experience.

Josh Kippin, Australian Marathon Champion, who used to paddle
slalom has also left for Europe to compete in the 2016 ICF
Canoe Marathon World Marathon Championships in Brandenburg
Germany!

Avon Descent Volunteers Recognition
Function

Well it was a pretty good day for me last Sunday
at the Avon Descent Volunteers Recognition Function. Not only
did I receive an Avon Descent jacket for having competed in
25 Avon Descents (I've now done 26) I joined an elite band
of people who have devoted much of their life to the Avon
Descent in one way or another and become an Avon Descent Legend.
Past Chairman Kevin Harrison and I joined Jim Smith, Rex Adams,
John King, Darryl Long, Neil Long, Kim Epton, Ian Williamson
and Greg Kaeding. It was an honour to receive such an award.

I’m not quite sure if I should be called a legend, (there
is probably a better word) but looking back, much of my life
has been encouraging beginners to enter the Avon Descent as
well as participating myself. I have had the pleasure of conducting
Avon Descent fitness, flat and white water skill sessions
over many years with the help of other dedicated instructors.
As well as conducting Avon Information Lectures, Support Crew
Lectures, organising and doing Avon Descent Competency Assessments,
writing an Avon River Guide, a paddling text book, I have
also been an Avon Descent sponsor for many years.

The Avon Descent has given me an enormous amount of pleasure
and has certainly kept me fit since my first one in 1978.
I thank Chairman, Kim Epton and the Board of Directors and
all those volunteers and organisers who have kept it running
over the last 44 years. We all need to encourage others to
give it a go as it is such a great event and it is a very
up-lifting experience when you reach the end.

Surely there is room for a paddler!

If a K1 is too tippy

a good kayak to try.

Stories

Young Luke Dooley and his mum came to
Perth by bus two weeks ago to retreive their car which broke
down on the Avon Descent weekend. It was a quick trip but
we managed to fit in a training session. With Luke in my Down
River kayak and me in my much longer faster multisport kayak
we took off. Well Luke did and I hooked onto his wash and
paddled as fast as I could trying desperately to keep up with
him.

I kept up so it ended being a good training
session for us both.

I'm trying to keep up
by wash riding but was forced to drop back to take a photo

Will there be
High Speed Ferries on the Upper Swan!!!

Did you read in the weekend
paper that the Premier was in favour of having a high speed
ferry system up the Swan River as far as Guildford. He said,
that with the new modern ferries they give out little wash
and they would not damage the river banks!

I don't know if he has
even been up the upper reaches of the Swan but even the smallest
of wash erodes the river banks and if they are going to and
fro several times a day I can't believe that damage wouldn't
be done.

And what would happen
to the 5 knot rule that extends upstream from around Garrett
Road Bridge in Bayswater.

Can you imagine them
passing the two Kayak Clubs and rowing sheds at high speed
and all the paddlers and rowers inbetween.

The river banks on Ron
Courtney Island used to be connected to the wooden poles,
so you can see what happens by boat wash in just a few years.

The new beach downstream
of Ascot Kayak Club, opposite Ron Courtney Island is a great
asset to the area and a delight for an Italian greyhound that
loves sand between its toes.

The wall is a work of
art.

With my good friend Lawrence

Have you heard
the story.

Back in 1999 Lawrence and
I used to train pretty seriously, well a little seriously.
Lawrence always beat me on shorter races but I think I held
my own on longer races so it was going to be very interesting
to see how we would go competing against each other in the
Avon Descent. Unfortunately Lawrence did beat me on day one
by 12 seconds and he started a grid in front on the start
of day 2. On the paddle down the valley though I managed to
pass him and keep ahead of him and by the time I got to Ascot
Kayak Club I thought I had it in the bag. Unbeknown to me
Lawrence was close behind and he said it nearly killed him
trying to catch me when he saw me around Olive farm. Then
at the Tonkin Highway Bridge Lawrence did catch up and overtook
me. Back then I didn't think it appropriate to wash ride your
mates so I let him go knowing I still had a few seconds up
my sleeve. He managed to paddle the last few kilometres faster
than I though so by the time Lawrence reached the finish line
he was quite aways ahead and to my dismay after waiting for
the results Lawrence beat me by 7 seconds. Fancy after two
days and 126kms Lawrence beat me by 12 seconds on Day 1, I
beat Lawrence by 5 seconds on Day 2 but overall Lawrence beat
me by 7 seconds. It was a very painful defeat and of course
Lawrence brings it up several times a year so it's a defeat
hard to forget.

So when Peter Liddle who
was in the same class as me in this years Avon Descent passed
me at Ascot Kayak Club, after wash riding me for 4 kms, I
knew I had to wash ride him and not allow him to get too far
in front. I had about 50 seconds up my sleeve as he left 2
minutes in front of me on day 2 and he only beat me by 1 minute
and 3 seconds on day 1 so if I could keep up with him to the
end I would win. It was a struggle to keep up but I did and
although Peter beat me to the finish line overall I had beaten
Peter by 49 seconds.

So remember every second
counts if you want a good result or beat your mates.
