CDU Closing Down Sale Extended

We have been able to extend our shop closing
date to the 13th of May. This will give our customers an extra
13 days to grab a bargain and for us to shed some more stock
as we will have very limited storage area when we move out
as we haven't found another suitable unit.

We are also selling most of our demo craft except for the
Epic skis which we will still be selling when we close the
store. We will still have our website, but with less stock
items on it and our newsletter will still be sent out to keep
you up to date with WA paddling.

From our Balcony

Last Saturday when I jumped out of bed and
entered our living area this is what I saw across the river,

a magnificent sun rise.

******************************************

There are 3 more Saturday morning fitness sessions
before we finish our group training. For these next 3 weeks
all the money raised at our Saturday morning training sessions
will go to Perth paddler Sandy Robson who is paddling from
Germany to Australia. After months, years on the high seas
Sandy is coming to her final stage and the money collected
will help off-set some of her costs.

I hope that we can raise at least $1000.00.
After such a remakable journey she deserves to have our support
on her last part of her huge expedition.

Why not come down and help us achieve it the $1000.00 target.

Stories

John Carman
Down South

Many years ago I always wanted to visit
Antarctica. Job applications for ANARE were not the best option.
Requiring many years of Caterpillar experience. The point
of not ever seeing what was down there, other than docos on
the TV, always remained a distant dream. Forward Thirty odd
years (With Caterpillar experience) and I was able to go.
Aurora (Shipping Company-Sydney) visit the Antarctic peninsular
several times yearly. The small size of their vessels allow
close contact to areas other bigger vessels cannot go. Embarkation
was from Ushuaia and ended up here also. Falkland Island was
the preferred disembarkation but the weather did not allow
for aircraft to land or take off, so we were onboard for an
extra five days. (Cabin Fever) Thus we sailed to the nearest
Port.

Taking a break

I had No conception of
what to expect, other than "cold". Two degrees on
a Winter Swan River might suffice. Well almost. But the wind
chill at times pushed the tolerance a bit. With a good instructor
and relatively smooth seas the transition went well, to the
point where in my photos I look very tired from morning and
afternoon 2-3 hour trips to shores and Penguin Rookeries that
only one could have hoped for. This went on for Three weeks,
touring the Ice capped mountains let alone serene arctic wilderness.
It's just so Wild and Wilderness.

The seas were pretty
rough. I was pleased not to be paddling

We ventured to the Weddell
Sea and then to Elephant Island where Shackleton made his
last part of an epic journey to South Georgia, and the Seas
were as atrocious now as was then. Waves as high as the porthole.
Fun for some but most required assistance from the on board
Doctor. Even he was crook.

Checking out a seal colony

Most Penguin Rookeries
we saw were on South Georgia, with about Six or Seven stops
to get ashore. In a Kayak one does not have the same approach
as getting ashore as by Zodiac inflatable, but getting there
is much of the fun, weather permitting. Towards the end of
our trip I know the conditions ventured were a lot worse that
when started weeks earlier, but we thrived on what we paddled
in and around. One place of interest was Grytviken as this
whole area is, as it was, when the last Whalers last Century
plied their trade. Virtually untouched. Wild life beyond anything
I have ever seen, and we were stalked by a Leopard Seal for
some time when out on the seas.

No they are not statues

It was quite an effort
getting in and out of the kayaks

Not sure if I'll go back,
but the fulfillment was enormous. Too many other places on
the planet to visit, and yes probably somewhere where a Kayak
can be enjoyed. Feel free to contact for any information,
via Terrys shop. And yes there are many more tales. Etc. Cameras
lost, food, people. The Russian crew.
