We had the third DR race around the buoys at Ascot Tuesday
night. There was some great racing and the longer course really
had paddlers breathing heavily. Bruce McWhirter and Peter
Liddle led the way with me coming third. In the Wavehoppers
it was Peter Gigengack, Michael Liddle and John Breed. The
ladies Bonnie in the DRs and Jane in the Wavehoppers. This
was our last Tuesday night race until the DR racing season
which usually starts with a race around bouys at Ascot Kayak
Club. We also had our last DR Friday morning training session
this morning. It was good to see several new paddlers take
advantage of these sessions. It was even better to see them
improve.
Remember skills don't just come to you, they have to be practised
and to be really good you need to continue practising. In
our training sessions it has brought out weaknesses even in
the best of our paddlers especially on the tigher turns. Until
you can handle a DR as good as Josh Kippin or Dave Worthy
its best to keep practising. It's even more important for
paddlers entering the Avon Descent in a DR kayak, being a
long race tireness creeps in when paddling the bigger more
testing rapids and this is when your lack of skills will show
and mistakes happen.

Alaine managed to do a training session on Wenesday night
at the Ascot Kayak Club race. She doesn't get out very much
nowadays but we still beat Alan Moreby and Steve Coffee in
the doubles. A training session now and then is her way of
building up for the 30km City Lights race which is only a
week away. She's in a double with me so I suppose she will
just rest when she gets tired!
Remember to Enter the City Lights Race ASAP.

Watercraft Cradles
The ROLA WCU employs
a "Multi-Pivot" system to mould to the widest range
of displacement hull shapes, as well as providing assistance
for loading craft from side of the vehicle. The cradles attaches
quickly and easily, either directly to the crossbar channel,
or via the supplied low-profile adaptor units.
The pivot system makes it easier to
lift your craft on to the vehicle.
The Universal Rola Watercraft Carrier
takes a lot of the struggle of getting your boat on your car.
The ease of loading comes from the cradle pads that are able
to tilt to the outside of the car and the craft can then be
rolled over into position.
Step 1. Tilt the cradles that are closest
to the outside of the car, to the outside of the car.
Step 2. Lift the craft onto the roof rack placing the edge
onto/against the cradle pads.
Step 3. Lower the craft slowly into place by pushing your
craft against the pivoted pads and letting it roll over into
the cradles.
Step 4. Adjust the craft to sit level within the cradles.
Step 5. Secure the craft with Tie Downs.
The pivot system makes it easier to
lift your craft on to the vehicle.
We stock Thule, Rhino and
Rola roof racks, cradles and accessories

Getting Ready
for the Australian Marathon Championships
Josh, Matt, James and
Simon in hard training for the National Marathon Championships
WA paddlers Josh Kippin,
Matt Dean, James Morfitt, Simon Roll, Mark Lawson, Peter Martin,
Judy Darbyshire, Bronwyn Martin, Patrick Tullock are definite
starters at the Australian Marathon Championships at Easter
*****************************
Alaine and I were on
a serious training paddle on Sunday morning when Josh, Matt,
James and Simon came flying by. We tried to keep up but we
had no chance. As we reached the pipeline at Guildford we
came across a dolphin trying to catch a feed in the shallows.
Having already stopped to talk to Samatha Pilton we soon went
from our serious training mode to recreational mode and started
following the dolphin for the next 15 minutes. It was up and
down like a yo-yo and speeding off to catch a fish. A few
times it came up so close that my camera was way out of focus.
The dolphin cruised the
shallows towards Midland
By the time we got home
we had paddled about 10kms and I believe that the marathon
boys had paddled over 30kms at a racing pace.

Thursday 25th
February
There was a definite chill
and a cool breeze blowing when I walked down to the river
in the perfect morning sunlight. There were already paddlers
and rowers passing the house even before I got up. I took
off from my put-in point and met Mark, Martin, Rowen, Bronwyn
and Michael already half way through their training session.
I passed the club and headed upstream towards my old put-in
point but within a kilometre I met John Breed and Ann in a
K2. I was on the far side of the river so I let them pass
and then turned and chased them. They were going a fair speed
so I had to work hard to catch them which I did just after
the Sandy Beach jetty. As soon as I pulled beside them our
speed stepped up 3 notches and it was on to the finish. I
managed to pip them to the line though. Like many others the
pair are getting ready for the City Lights Race which they
should do well in.
We had a bit of a chat and I paddled
back upstream to do a little more training as 2 kilometres
wasn't a lot. I saw Arnold Drok and Geoff Mullins coming the
other way so I let them pass and gave chase again. I caught
these two older gentlemen (must be in their 70s) who are still
paddling very well fairly quickly. Geoff was paddling his
sea kayak and getting ready for the Sea Kayak Symposium in
Albany. Arnold was in his Time Bandit. I left them at the
club and paddled by Ron Courtney Island. I saw two Ospreys
perched high in the trees with the sun shining brightly on
their chests. The adult on the higher tree branch and the
youngster perched on a slightly lower tree branch on a different
tree. I was curious to see where the other two of the family
were so I decided to paddle around the island and see if I
could see them in their nest.
The young Osprey had
only been out of the nest for a month but it appears ready
to look after itself. Look at its sharp talons
I found one of the other
younsters perched in a dead tree on the west side of the island.
Unfortunately it was in the shadows so I knew the photos weren't
going to be that good but I clicked a few shots anyway. I
managed to paddle virtually underneath it and clicked a photo
which is a feat in itself when paddling a K1. It got spooked
and flew downstream landing in a tree right below my house.
Another chance to get some more photos but with the sun this
time in the right direction.
I gripped the cord of my
camera between my teeth and paddled about 200 metres to where
it landed and drifted as close as I dare before clicking off
a few photos.
The young Osprey camouflaged
by the trees only metres from our house
The Osprey perched above
the steps I use to get to the river.
With the camera in one
hand and the paddle bracing me in the other hand taking a
photo wasn't that easy in my unstable K1 but I had to get
a photo of it being there. At times my knees shaked like a
group of people erratically clapping hands. I have never capsized
in my K1 but if it was going to happen I felt it would happen
this morning, and with camera in hand! Miraculously I didn't
capsize and as I got closer and moved into a position where
the osprey wasn't hidden by the backdrop of tree branches
I managed to get a series of fairly good shots considering
I was using my small point and shoot Olympus 8.0 megapixel
camera.
The youngster allowed
me to get pretty close
I had only paddle 4kms
so I thought I had better leave the Osprey and paddle another
kilometre before going home.

A view from our balcony
- a speeding powerboat in a 5kn zone
I didn't realise how
many powerboats used the upper reaches of the Swan River in
the middle of the day at the weekend until I sat there a while
and looked on.
If I had a radar gun
I would have clocked over 15 boats speeding in an hour.
The 5kn zone means little
to some.
This powerboat towing
a tube was going up and down the river from near Claughton
Reserve past Ascot Kayak Club and back for at least 30 minutes.
A 5km zone and a kayaking area meant nothing to this boatie!
It's the Rottnest
