Well the next newsletter is my 500th. When I think about
it, a lot of my life has gone into producing newletters. In
the 1970s and 80s when I used to be magazine editor for the
Ascot Kayak Club and Canoe WA I would turn a handle on an
old spirit duplicator or a gestetner machine to print the
pages. Every word was typed on a type writer without a spell
check and then the pages had to be put out on a table and
collated before being stapled together, folded, addressed
and then sent out by post.

How things have changed but nevertheless it still takes a
lot of time to create a good newsletter. Nearly 2000 people
have signed up to the CDU newsletter, I'm sure not everyone
would read every page but I do get some good feedback so that
is encouraging.

The Avon Descent is Getting
Close

For paddlers who paddle all year round preparing
for the Avon Descent is pretty simple but if you are a novice
and done little paddling it's time to get into the stride
of paddling 2 - 3 times a week and also get a few skills under
your belt.

The Avon is a great race so it's time to
encourage others to give it a go.

They will have lots of fun. It's also character
and confidence building and very addictive.

Unite on the Swan

Unite on the Swan is presented by Canoeing WA and Water Wanderers.
100% of proceeds from ticket registrations will be donated.
This exciting record attempt will take place on Sunday April
10, 2016.

Imagine 3,200 passionate West Australians and their paddle
craft uniting on the Swan River to break a Guinness World
record and support the victims of the Waroona District fires.

On the day, join in to celebrate paddling the Swan River
and living in Western Australia. Represent your family, friends
club, school or paddling group by wearing your colours with
pride. Or dress up and wear a wig or what-ever!… the
bolder and brighter, the better! Together we will create a
massive sea of amazing colour and fun on the Swan - as we
raft up to attempt breaking a world record… and make
history!

The first priority is to make sure that we raise a considerable
donation for the victims of the Waroona District fires. This
is why we are doing a Pozible campaign: so you can pledge

Lightweight
Interface

BARRACUDA INTERFACE -
THE NEXT GENERATION

Using some of the most
innovative technology in the industry, the unique Ultralight
construction considerably reduces the weight of Barracuda
kayaks making handling on and off the water easier.

Now that the paddling public has been spoiled by Barracuda's
light weight high Performance Sea kayaks it is time to move
onto the next generation of hull forms that the ultralight
technology now lends itself to. What better time to launch
the newest Barracuda kayak than in their 20th anniversary
year!

The Interface is the results of the flow through effect, taking
all the design lessons learnt from the deep vee hulls and
the Beachcomber Ultralight and combining them into a user
friendly kayak for the majority of paddlers whence the name
"Interface"

DURABLE

Through vacuum thermo forming, Barracuda kayaks ensure light
yet tough and durable kayaks, without loss of performance.

Stories

2016 State Marathon
Champs

The State Marathon Champs
were moved over to Sandy Beach Reserve due to bank restoration
and building going on at Ascot. It turned out being a pretty
good course although the portage was quite long and demanding
for some. Being in the 65 class I didn't have to portage and
I only had to paddle about 11kms so it didn't really feel
like a marathon event for me. Last year I paddled about 18kms
and did four portages. It's like you are regarded as having
one foot in the grave once you hit the 65 spot.

As it worked out there were only two
of us in the 65 kayak class, John Dinucci being the other
but there were three other 65+ paddlers on skis or Multisport
kayaks, but it was John I wanted to beat.

Today the adults were paddling
K1s and the juniors were paddling K2s. I was on grid 3. Warren
Southwell and Chris Watson on their Epic Skis soon made an
impact and were off ahead. John Dinucci was the next paddler
to gain some ground but John Van Maanan in his Time Bandit
latched onto his wash. I didn't want to be left behind so
I slipped on the back of the Time Bandit. Everything was going
well until we hit the first turn when John D managed to get
away from John V which within seconds put me further back
so John Dinucci soon had a sizeable lead. I didn't want to
lose contact with John D so I went on the inside of John V,
paddled hard, passed him and managed to claw back to John
Dinucci. I was much happier sitting on John's wash.

Photo Lawrence Greed

As we reached the jetty
area a group of juniors were bunched up and as I weaved in
and out of them their wakes affected my balance (old age)
and John started pulling away from me. I knew then I was in
a little trouble and would find it hard to catch up again
unless John capsized.

I was now behind John D and ahead of John V and although John
V wasn't officially in my class because he was paddling a
Multisport kayak I still wanted to beat him as he had beaten
me at the last race so I needed to get my own back. Just because
you are old doesn't mean you are not competitive.

John Van Mannan. Photo Lawrence Greed

It wasn't long before Nicholas
and Matthew Greed passed me in their double kayak giving me
a little encouragement. Unfortunately they were the only ones
in their class so they had no-one to beat. It seems that most
of the top juniors only do sprints. Matthew and Nicholas do
both. Sprints are in the Olympics and so the funding is thrown
at sprints and slalom rather than marathon that have World
Championships and are not in the Olympics. And because Sprint
and Slalom Kayaking are in the Olympics junior paddlers are
able to strive for selection in the Olympic Hopefuls or the
Junior Olympics. So juniors in sprint and slalom have a much
better pathway because they are Olympic Sports.

the Olympic Hopes. Photo Lawrence Greed

Meanwhile there was a 4
boat tussle at the front. Josh Kippin, Simon Roll, Matt Dean
and James Morfitt were flying around the course. They were
WAs best marathon paddlers and had been training hard for
the National Championships in two weeks' time.

The first lap soon went by, only two
more to go. John had extended his lead a little but it was
hard to see how much I had gained on John V as I knew if I
tried turning around I might just capsize so I kept my head
forward. Usually we have Rob Roll in our class and Rob usually
beats both John and I but at the moment he has his arm in
a sling after having an operation. Jerry Alderson is also
a champion veteran but he was just recovering from a knee
operation so he was indisposed as well so that left me and
John to be the only two veteran's to paddle K1.

On the second lap the juniors were more spread out around
the Sandy Beach area so there wasn't quite as much wash to
put me off. I was having a little trouble bracing my feet
though. I always wear booties in my narrow K1 but today I
decided to have bare feet because booties fill up the space
between the T bar steering stick and the side of the steering
system and doesn't allow for a tight turn. (This is why some
marathon paddlers prefer pedals as paddlers are able to do
tighter turns and have more control going down rapids or chasing
waves.) Today we have two turns on every lap so it was important
not to have booties prevent me from turning. What I didn't
bank on was that my bare feet on the foot bar were quite slippery
and not having that tight feel I usually have, made me feel
a little more insecure with each leg drive. Something to consider
next year.

At the top turn of my last
lap I noticed that John V was still a ways behind but I just
couldn't slack off just in case he found some extra energy
that I didn't have. Both John's are formidable paddlers so
I was feeling pretty privileged being between the two. At
the last turn I could see that John V had no chance of catching
me up unless I capsized so I was quite happy to paddle across
the finish line 59 seconds behind John D.

I paddled over to the beach and waited for John V but he had
headed off and doing another lap. He must have had a rush
of blood to his head as the 65 division were only supposed
to be doing 3 laps but on his return he said he was told he
had to do 4 laps which remains a mystery to why. Now I will
never know how close he would have been to me if he was only
doing three laps.

Matt at the start of the portage. Photo Lawrence Greed

Well my race was over but
the excitement was just starting. It meant I could get my
camera out and take photos and watch the younger paddlers
fight it out. And there were a few fights. The biggest being
between Josh Kippin, Simon Roll, Matt Dean and James Morfitt.
They were neck and neck for most of the race then James somehow
lost the pack and he was out on his own with no hope of catching
the other three. It was heart breaking watching him struggle
to get back to them. I imagine he would have had a shattered
mind and less will to keep up a very fast pace, yet he kept
going and was forth over the line.

Matt, Simon and Josh

Matt and Josh leap into
the water before Simon

On the second last lap
Josh made his move and managed to get several metres in front
of Simon and Matt and the race was really on. At the last
portage Josh was still in front but the other two boys were
not giving up but when Josh crossed the line 25 seconds ahead
it was then a fight for second place which Simon took out
by a fraction of a second.

In the ladies open Bronwyn Martin kept Bonnie at bay but Bonnie
was fighting hard and was in front of many of the men and
was too good for Baillee on the day, who came third.

in first place

DAY 2 Doubles

I didn't have a partner to paddle in the K2 Championships
so I went to watch. It was another exciting race between Josh
and Matt and Simon and James. Josh and Matt although lagging
a little on the second last lap came back and beat Simon and
James by 2 seconds.

Sprint Paddlers
Representing Australia This Year

Ten WA paddlers have been selected in
the Australian teams for 2016, Jesse Phillips, Ferenc Szekszardi,
Steve Bird, and Daniel Bowker have been selected in the sprint
squad. Daniel now lives in the East but he is really a local
Perth paddler! Steve and Daniel are also in the Olympic squad.

The first two World Cup races are in Duisberg, Germany and
Racice, Czech Republic in May, the third World Cup is Montemor
in Portugal in June. Ferenc paddles a canoe and will compete
at the Olympics with Martin Marinov in C2.

In the U23 women we have
Shannon Reynolds and in the Juniors, Monique Carbone and Luke
Morton. Mark Stowe is listed as NSW but he's been in WA long
enough! They will all compete in the U23/Junior Sprint Worlds
in Minsk, Belarus at the end of July.

Yasemin Ray, Matthew Greed,
Caleb Bushby and Toby Digney made the Olympic Hopes team to
compete at the OH regatta in Szeged, Hungary in September.
The U16 and U18 "men and women" had one of the most
competitive field of paddlers for several years.

Across Canada

Stage 5 - Lake Superior
-

To paddle the biggest inland sea in the world

Have you ever thought about
going on a big kayaking trip and camping ever night in a wilderness?
You don’t have to be old to appreciate the beauty and
solitude of the wilderness. I started doing big expeditions
in my 20s.

A lot of people just don’t appreciate
the things around them, the birds, the trees, the flowers
and the stars, to name a few. So why not get out there and
find out more about the world we live in.

I have several expedition reports on
my website which should wet you appetite and my latest trip
to be posted is part 5 of the trip I did across Canada. This
particular section Alaine, Leonie and I were paddling around
Lake Superior, the largest inland sea in the world.

Why not have a read or
just look at the pictures. Go to-

Race of the Week

Unite on the
Swan

Event Date: Sunday 10 April, 2016

Official Zone Entrance and Counting
Opens: 7:30am

Official Zone Entrance and Counting
Closes: 8:30am

All about the Zones

You can gather outside the Zone entrances
before 7.30am, but being counted during the allocated time
is essential.

Raft-Up Time: This will depend on how
long it takes to get everyone on the water. Please listen
to event marshals on the day!

Off the Water Time: Again, this depends
how long it takes to get everyone on the water, rafted up
and the drone photos taken. Once this is done, the marshals
will signal to paddlers to start breaking up the raft.

The safety of everyone participating
is important, so please be patient.

Rules and Regulations

Accepted Craft

Canoes, skis and kayaks are accepted
under the Guinness World Record regulations. This includes
peddle and paddle propelled kayaks. Stand up paddle boards
are not included.

Guinness World Record – Counting

Each craft will need to be counted at
one of the Official Event Entrance Zones. It is absolutely
vital that you are counted at your zone!

Stewards who do not have a personal
investment in the event will count and validate the number
of craft. They will also collect photographic and video evidence.

Safety

The safety of all who take part in Unite
on the Swan is important! All participants are asked to be
patient on the day and support their fellow paddlers. It is
recommended that all participants wear a personal flotation
device (PFD). It is a requirement that all participants under
the age of 12 wear a PFD and are accompanied by an adult.

Slight bumping is inevitable, however
we ask all participants to be as careful and cautious as possible.

Participant Age

Anyone over the age of six is able to
participate in Unite on the Swan. Participants aged 6 –
12 must be accompanied by an adult and be of competent paddling
ability.

Event Entrance Zones

There are THREE OFFICIAL EVENT ENTRANCE ZONES.

There are three zone entrances and this
is where all craft will be counted. It is essential you are
counted.

The boundary of the corral
is the channel makers on three sides and the shore line along
McCallum Park. You must stay within the boundary markers.

When you register as a Unite on the
Swan participant, you choose which Zone you want to enter
through. In order to accurately allocate Stewards to count
participants, it is vitally important that you enter through
the Zone you chose at registration.

Emergency Situations

If you are in the centre and an emergency requires you to
get from inside the raft to outside the raft quickly, don’t
panic! send the message to the marshals and all the paddlers
will make a path way for you.

Additional Information

We have checked the tides and they won’t cause us too
much bother. Being early in the morning in Autumn, there is
an excellent chance we will have a mill pond for rafting.

In the event of a strong easterly wind
trying to turn us into the Swan River Drift, we will have
marshals positioned along the shoreline to help anchor the
raft. We will also be relying on all participants to help
in this situation.

A few suggestions

take care of toilet requirements before entering the corral

bring fluids and snacks

a comfortable stable craft is great for this event
