Two more happy customers....
Barracuda AR Duo
Karen and Ric love their double kayak
Hello Terry, Alaine
The Barracuda AR Duo arrived safe last week and on Sunday
we took her for the maiden voyage out past the "new"
Blackwood River mouth up the newly created estuary to the
"old" mouth, which has now closed off.
What a terrific craft. It was blowing around 40 to 50 kmh
and we had to keep paddling to avoid going backwards, but
the Duo tracked well and did present too much of a challenge
for our first efforts. Unlike those trying to paddle on the
typical sit on plastic "kayaks" that seem to be
everywhere this time of year, we had a relatively easy time
in the conditions.
A photo is attached of Karen celebrating arrival at the old
river mouth, with Augusta town in the background. We are looking
forward to many more voyages on the Blackwood and elsewhere.

The New
Epic V5 Surfski
The Epic V5 surfski is Epic's brand
new addition to the rotomolded surfski line.
When the Rotomolded V7 was launched
with its proprietary foam core construction that offered unmatched
strength and stiffness in plastic kayaks, it became an instant
hit in the global surfski market. The V5 has been designed
for those paddlers seeking a surfski style sit on top that
is even more stable than the V7 & even easier to handle
in and out of the water. At 14 feet in length, with a width
of 23.6 inches, and weighing only 46 pounds, the V5 provides
excellent primary and secondary stabilty in all water conditions
& can be easily handled in any situation off the water
when loading and carrying. It fits a wide range of paddler
sizes, ranging from 4 foot 10 inches to 6 foot 7 inches.
Paddlers can look forward to paddling a design that is extremely
responsive & has the ability to turn easily on waves.
This makes it the perfect surfski for all bodies of water,
including the ocean, rivers, lakes and even playing in shorebreak.
V5 Arriving
Soon
It comes standard with the same proprietary
carbon footboard system and the Epic designed & patented
bailer as used on every Epic surfski. One of the unique features
of the the Epic bailer is that it can be fully closed to seal
off the surfski cockpit. It can also be opened in increments
to drain the cockpit of any excess water as needed.
The V5 also has an aft storage hatch with a soft hatch cover
and a rough water hard hatch cover to ensure that it is water
tight in all water and surf conditions.
The V5 comes with a standard under the stern surfski rudder,
however its capability can be further enhanced with an optional
kick up rudder with no modification needed. The kickup rudder
allows the V5 to be paddled in rocky or shallow areas.

Stories
When people
around you say your absolutely mad, -
when you know that you
are going to paddle in one of the most dangerous and inhospitable
parts of the world,
when the police call you a fff-ing
idiot and tell you you can't go,
you just know that
it's going to be one hell of an exciting expedition.
Kimberley Kayak
Expedition
1982 100 Days
Solo

Imagine standing on a
Broome beach alone and paddling off into unknown territory
without any satellite phone or any other communication.
Imagine how lucky I was
to spend 10 days with a group of Aboriginals who were teaching
two people from the museum the traditional ways of hunting,
gathering and fishing and I was able to learn off them as
well.
Sandy making a spear
from a wattle tree and using his feet to straighten the timber
which had been in the hot coals.
What I learnt in those
10 days was invaluable and gave me a lot of confidence that
I would be able to stand a better chance of saving myself
if such a survival event would arise.
I also spent a few days
with another Aboriginal trochus collecting.
Imagine being able to
paddle through the Gaps, now called the Horizontal Waterfalls
which were only visited by very few back in 1982. Now it is
one of the Kimberly's big tourist attractions
Imagine paddling along
the spectacular Kimberley coastline and its islands alone.
Imagine the thoughts that were going through my head as I
fought the huge tidal currents and had a watchful eye for
crocodiles. In 1982 there was no-one around to spoil my solitude.
I had the country to myself. Imagine being camped on an island
with no communication with the outside world and whatever
happened in the day was all my own, good or bad I couldn't
share it.
Imagine what it was like
being dragged towards some of the biggest whirlpool/boils
in the world by a 20km or more current and not knowing if
you are going to be dragged down and never to be seen again.
Imagine standing on a
rock ledge looking out to some of the most spectacual scenery
in the world and knowing that Aboriginals have stood there
for hundreds of years before you. And lurking in the beautiful
green forest of mangroves there are crocodiles waiting for
any passing kayaker. Spear in hand I felt like a real explorer.
Imagine being camped
under the sheer cliffs of Kunmunya Hill where on the other
side there used to be a mission which is now deserted. A walk
there in 38 degree heat had me wobbling on my feet and experiencing
my first ever symptoms of heat exhaustion. I couldn't get
a permit to carry a firearm so I carried a bow and arrows
for protection, but these were impossible to use whilst in
the kayak and probably useless for crocodile attacks.
Replenishing my fresh
water supplies at Camp Creek, Prince Regent River
Imagine paddling up the
most splendid and remote Prince Regent River, turning into
a smaller creek full of mangroves and then being chased by
a crocodile not knowing what was going to happen next.
Imagine being followed
by sharks for several days and being hit by them on a regular
basis.
Imagine camping near
a boab tree that Captain Kings men inscribed 'HMC Mermaid
1820' into it.
After 100 days paddling
around the Kimberley Coast being chased by sharks and crocodiles
and facing huge tides, 40 degree heat and lack of fresh water
it was time to go home. So at the remote Mitchell Plateau
I buried the kayak and managed to get a lift out to Kununurra.
The kayak was picked up 6 months later and it went on to do
several more expeditions.
Imagine doing
such an amazing trip
if you can't do it just
read about it
