With three different paddling events taking part at the weekend
it was a busy time for some paddlers. The weekend started
off with another good turnout of 32 paddlers to our Saturday
morning training. Alaine who has done the timing all but a
handful of times over the last 13 years had something else
on so I timed instead of paddling. It meant that I had an
excuse not to be beaten by some of the newcomers.

After a day in the shop on Saturday, we drove out to City
Beach to watch the start and then the finish of the CDU IOP
Downwind Race that I sponsored. It's always great watching
the paddlers trying to get through the surf. Brendan Rice
won followed by a second later by David Graham. More pictures
below.

Then on Sunday it was the AKC Pairs Enduro where I had the
chance to see if I could paddle faster than last year when
Michael Liddle and I did it in a time of 1:19:07. Paddling
with Jarrod Eaves our time this year was 1:18:24. Was it the
conditions that helped us to go faster this year?

While the goal was to design a boat
that was faster than the competition on flat water, the Epic
V10 really shines in downwind and upwind heavy sea conditions.
It’s certainly a leader in its field and paddlers from
all over the world are using them.

The new V10 has:

A fully adjustable footbrace combines with a new high capacity
venturi drain to keep water out.

The single footwell and front deck cutaway allows for a closer,
more powerful stroke.

The adjustable footbrace with self adjusting pedals will accommodate
paddlers from 5'3" to 6'7" in height.

Epic re-designed the V10 seat for better comfort. The ergonomics
are improved with a narrower width at paddle entry.

The new V10 is fitted with a revolutionary
new EPIC designed and manufactured bailer. The new system
can be closed for a dry cockpit and no added drag when paddling
in flat water. When opened, it drains significantly faster
than any other drain system on the market. And it can easily
be adjusted on the fly – open a little to impart minimal
drag when paddling in moderate conditions, or incrementally
more as needed when conditions and water into the cockpit
increase.

Please note: Weights are approximate
and may vary up to 300g.

Weight:

New Club Construction (Fibreglass) 17.5 kg.

New Performance Construction 15.5 kg.

The V10 is available with standard or an optional long footboard
for people with big feet. The new V10 will fit paddlers from
5'4" to 6'8" height (1.62 to 2.03m).”

Stories

AKC Pairs Enduro

Sponsored by
Canoeing Down Under, The Coffee Lady, & AKC.

The Pairs Enduro is a race like no other.
You have to paddle in pairs, two different boats and you are
sent off at 1 minute intervals, the slower ones are usually
sent off first. I paired up with Jarred Eaves. Jarred has
only been paddling a year and half but now he is quicker than
me although he is less than half my age. In the last 11km
race he was 36 seconds faster than me but since then he had
increased his pace so I was expecting to do some wash riding.

It was interesting to know that out
of the 40 teams entered only 5 teams paddled with the same
person as last year.

Paddlers arriving for
the Pairs Enduro

80 paddlers were at the start. We were
delayed 30 minutes because of a stand-up paddle board race
was being held at Ascot where we were headed so organisers
were hoping they would be finished by the time we reached
there. Jarred and I were given number 108 which meant that
we were the 8th off the line and straight after the ladies.
The person who seeded us must have thought we paddled like
girls, so put us with the girls, (we just needed the T shirt.)

Jane, Bonnie, Baillee
and Ann -The T Shirt - I paddle like a girl - try and keep
up!

Looking down the list we could see that
we had several teams behind us slower than us including the
husband and wife team of Ross and Wendy Burdett who were number
125 and paddling plastic Epic V7s. At least we knew we weren't
going to be last.

Two teams in doubles started first,
followed by the ladies. Before Baillee and Bonnie took off
I shouted "we'll see you around the corner". I didn't
say which corner and the fact they were faster than us, we
would need to paddle extremely well to catch them up. Oh what
joy if we did.

Jarred and I did the
race in 1:18:24. Last year Michael Liddle and I did it in
1:19:0. Conditions may have be better this year. Photo John
Hilton

Within as few metres we
were paddling as a team. Jarrad with his extra muscle power
being slightly in front so I could wash-hang him. A minute
ahead were the father and son team of Mark and Jeremy Alderson.
Jeremy was only a little tacker but we were finding it hard
to gain any ground on them. Behind us was the team of Richard
Molek and Vince Lenardi who were paddling Time Bandits kayaks.
They were a concern, although we both had beaten Vince in
the last 11km race but we were told that Richard was paddling
very well so we couldn't take them for granted. We just hoped
that they didn't work well as a team.

By Barkers Bridge (West
Swan Bridge) we were getting pretty close to Mark and Jeremy
Alderson. Young Jeremy had kept us at bay for several kilometres
but we were now only 50 metres behind. Then the unfortunate
happened, he suddenly capsized but his dad was there to help
him out. Jeremy was doing so well up until then.

By Fishmarket Reserve we
had passed the teams of Anne Crouch & Maya Elston, and
Anne Warger & Helen Breed. At times I was trying to take
the lead but Jarred was too fast for me to last that long.
For most of the race we could see Baillee and Bonnie ahead
but now they were getting further into the distance so I knew
I would be eating my words, 'we will see you around the corner'.
Bugger we will be getting an ear full when they realise they
had beaten us.

As we came up to the club
the double pair were just finishing. With 2.3kms to go I was
still feeling pretty good but it was hard to go any faster.
Once we rounded the island we could see Baillee and Bonnie
and Jane and Erica coming the other way after doing the turn.
We just knew we hadn't beaten the younger pair. After the
turn we only had 1km to go and I could see some faster teams
on their way to the turn. Then with about 500 metres to go
I saw Richard and Vince. It didn't look good for us as they
were about a kilometre behind, but they had started 5 minutes
after we did.

We crossed the line strongly
but when the results came out we were 1.56secs behind Bonnie
and Baillee, we had only beaten Jane and Erica by 58secs but
worst of all we were beaten by Richard and Vince by 27 seconds.

It looks like it's back
to more training.

Race of the Week

Canoeing Down
Under

IOP Downwind Race

After closing the shop on Saturday afternoon
Alaine and I headed over to City Beach to watch the start
of the Canoeing Down Under sponsored IOP downwind race.

Paddlers start arriving

The wind condition wasn't
looking good earlier on in the day but by the start of the
race it was starting to howl. After the briefing paddlers
carried their skis down to the water and faced the surf break.
It wasn't huge but it wasn't small either so it made it very
interesting for paddlers preparing to get out. Some tried
and failed the first time. Others capsized, others waited
for quite a long time before finally conquering the surf.
It was fun watching especially when there were a few spills.

It's to the water for
a paddle out to the start a few hundred metres from shore

Competitors wait for
a lull in the waves

The waves get bigger

Some wait, some go and
some get smashed

Some are good judges
and some are just lucky

The slower paddlers were
away first followed some time later by the faster paddlers.
It was then we left City Beach and headed to the finish. The
finish flags were flying high when we arrived at Sorrento,
testament to a good wind which was pushing the paddlers towards
home.

It was a fairly hot day
standing on the beach at the start line at City Beach but
the wind had certainly cooled the day at Sorrento. We waited
and finally we saw some paddlers come into view. There were
two paddlers well in the lead, Brendan Rice and David Graham.
Brendan paddled closer to the flags and Dave hit the sand
well before from the flags and started running well before
Brendan hit the beach. Brendan hit the beach and with both
paddlers now running towards the finish flag it was a tight
tussle but Brendan had a metre advantage breaking the finish
tape a second before David.

Two more paddlers came in a little later
and then the masses started ploughing through the waves and
hitting the beach at so many different angles, some not as
pretty as others. With paddlers being sent off at different
times it meant that we didn't know which paddlers were the
faster ones.

Brendan Rice gets out
of the water closer to the finishing post, whilst David Graham
(out of the picture) gets off his ski further down the beach.

Brendan just pips David
across the finishing line. 45:38.2 & 45:39.0

Travis England is 4th
with several paddlers breathing down his neck.47:17.9

A bunch of paddlers come
in, some from the slower group, some from the fast group.

Ceris Graham 56:46.6
runs to the finish line

Spencer King does a stabilising
stroke in knee deep water whilst Raf Avagard looks on wondering
what he is doing. 1:00:29.5

Andrew Pollard rushes
to the line at his first ever downwind race. He only bought
the V8 3 weeks ago.
