It was quiet last weekend for paddlers but this weekend is
going to be much busier for them. Many paddlers will be going
down south to compete in the Blackwood Marathon, others will
be competing in the Canoeing Down Under sponsored IOP Down
Wind Race on Saturday afternoon and on Sunday morning there
is the AKC Pairs Enduro which is partly sponsored by Canoeing
Down Under. Some paddlers will be racing in two events. Next
week is the Augusta Adventure Race.

For one week only, please note that on the 7th November our
Saturday morning training will be held at Claughton Reserve,
Katanning Street, Bayswater. This is due to a rowing event
starting at Sandy Beach that week.

It's certainly perfect paddling time with day temperatures
in the mid twenties but soon the summer heat will be here.
This morning it was cloudy and Alaine and I went for our big
5.5km training session and on the way back we did a 75 metre
circuit of Ron Courtney Island to put a bit more distance
under our belt. Circumnavigating the island though there were
a lot of birds flitting around as usual and fortunately my
camera was handy so I took it out and took a few shots. The
cloudy sky didn't help to capture the best of pictures but
I got a few decent ones as you will see further below. The
island is more like a bird sanctuary, although some racing
paddlers may not notice them but for me, having an interest
in everything on the water when I have a paddle in my hand,
keeps me more motivated to keep paddling.

A Darter on Ron Courtney Island. Look at its
plumage

There were about 41 paddlers at our Saturday
morning training this last week. It is not only a good workout
we also have a great bunch of paddlers taking part.

The good thing about living near the river
is that when I take the dog for a walk I can still see who
is paddling. Sunday afternoon the Greed family, Nicholas,
Matthew, Christopher and Lawrence were sneaking in a paddle.

Birds on Ron
Courtney Island Ashfield

The island is only 30
metres by 9 metres at the longest and widest part

Photos taken this morning
30/10/15 at 7.35am

Sky cloudy

This morning the sky
as cloudy and although it wasn't the best day to take photos
I was able to take a few bird shots on Ron Courtney Island,
Ashfield/Redcliffe.

The island and surrounds
is always packed with birds, many I didn't capture in these
photos.

The Darter

Have a real good look
at the magnificent plumage of the darter.

The Darter is a large,
slim water bird with a long snake-like neck, sharp pointed
bill, and long, rounded tail. Male birds are dark brownish
black with glossy black upperwings, streaked and spotted white,
silver-grey and brown. The strongly kinked neck has a white
or pale brown stripe from the bill to where the neck kinks
and the breast is chestnut brown. Females and immatures are
grey-brown above, pale grey to white below, with a white neck
stripe that is less distinct in young birds. The Darter is
often seen swimming with only the snake-like neck visible
above the water, or drying its wings while perched on a tree
or stump over water. While its gait is clumsy on land, it
can soar gracefully to great heights on thermals, gliding
from updraft to updraft. It has a cross-shaped silhouette
when flying.

The Darter's slender
body, long, snake-like neck and its pointed, rather than hooked,
bill distinguishes it readily from the bulkier cormorants
with which it is often found.

Because of its long and slender neck,
the Australasian Darter is sometimes called the snakebird.
Usually inhabiting freshwater wetlands, darters swim with
their bodies submerged beneath the water’s surface, with
only the sinuous neck protruding above the water, enhancing
its serpentine qualities. Darters forage by diving to depths
of about 60 centimetres, and impaling fish with its sharp,
spear-like beak. Small fish are swallowed underwater, but
larger ones are brought to the surface, where they are flicked
off the bill (sometimes into the air) and then swallowed head-first.

Birdlife Australia

Ospreys, Cockatoos, Galahs,
Lorikeets, Ravens, 28s are all found in the trees on Ron Courtney
Island

Ducks, coots, swamphen,
pelicans, are all found around the edges of the island

Crested terns and white
cockatoos at the downstream end of the island
