Perth Paddlers were all over the place this Easter with some
taking part in the Australian Marathon Championships at Canberra,
a young team of slalom paddlers paddling in Tasmania, Sandy
Robson paddling down the Malaysian coast, Jane Liddle and
her sisters in Vietnam, other paddlers going up north and
down south and many paddlers including myself, stayed at home,
having fun on the river and in the garden. Alaine back from
her NZ cruise caught some sort of virus so her weekend wasn't
so good.

Well done to all those taking part in the Marathon Championships.
Mark Lawson won the over 55 class and was awarded the Masters
Marathon Paddler of the Year. Josh and James just missed out
in winning the K2, after leading on the last lap but were
then beaten by 5 seconds by that master marathon paddler Michael
Leverett and Edward Lovick. There were many other good WA
results, check them out further below.

Although the dollar has dropped substantially against the
US dollar and prices will start to rise, all our Epic Skis
in stock are at last years price. So get your Epic ski before
stocks run out.

**********************

Some paddlers will be enjoying warm white water this week
as the Murchison River is at a great height.

Sad news: Our sincere condolences to Steve Pilton and his
family on the passing of his dad last weekend

Australian Marathon
Championships

Marathon National 55+
…My race Mark Lawson

Hold your boats….READY GO, shouts the starter. I do a
practice start for a few strokes.

The five laps 35+ 40+ 45+ category gets going and the four
laps 55+ 60+ grid is in two minutes. It feels good to be warmed
up and ready to go, the buildup is long with too much time
to think about what to do. Most races for me are an early
wake on a Sunday, a busy time sorting the timing setup at
registration, jump in the boat and quick arm burn, then line
up to start. The Nationals on the Molongo River at Lake Burley
Griffin Canoe Club are a four month training plan and build
up. The course is interesting and perfectly set up, 4.2 km
laps up a curving river with red buoys separating the sides
and taking you around the wider pool areas. Three buoy turns
are fast and tight with low hanging branches to clean up those
who go wide. The pontoon portage entry favours the right but
is fine on the left, a 120 metre grass run on the bank leading
down to a beach entry. The start and finish line are alongside
the middle of the portage.

My race strategy is fairly simple, to make the race as painful
as possible for my fellow competitors by keeping it quick
and throwing in a few unnecessary bursts. (I am kind to animals.)
My portage running is a strength so hard in, a fast run and
gut busting lift when back in the boat. That's the plan but
it's a race and anything can happen.

Being sensible middle age men means the start will be a crazy
17 km/h burst and see who can have a heart attack before the
top turn. I couldn't decide to line up on the left or right
so I went centre and I wasn't sure who the quickest paddlers
were so I didn't line up next to anyone. Our grid of 25 boats
moves up to the line and a few boats shuffle backwards and
forwards till Jerry Dunn calls hold your boats…READY
GOOO…. I wobble a bit but get going reasonably cleanly,
the epic on the inside right of me is half a boat up so I
lock onto his wash and stay with it for the first 500metres.
Not getting squeezed out and staying with the lead boat is
my priority. Peter Currie takes the lead on the far right
so I follow as the epic drops away. I hold the inside line
skimming the marker buoys (as our WW training with CDU) and
pushing up to lead to the first turn markers. Steve Pilton
(CDU Sat training) says visualize the arc so I did and with
weight forward and a bit of lean cut a full pace tight turn.
It's looking and feeling good with five in the pack but clearly
two of us working it. T2 would tell me…'don't drag the
guys around' (especially when he as in the back) which I laughed
off, but not following training advice from Jenny Bateman
is a scarier prospect. So I did my fair share of wash riding..!
Around the bottom turn and into the portage I stepped it up
and gave it everything through the portage. It is a bit like
doing a final sprint but the carrying on at race pace. I was
away clear but by the top turn I was surprised to find a boat
had chased me down. Turning I could see there were just two
of use in the race and no organized pack chasing…good.
Same into the second portage and I lifted with a big sprint
and carry, got clean away breaking the wash ride. I didn't
soften off but by the top turn I had been caught again to
my surprise. It was time for plan B, but unfortunately I didn't
have a plan B. So with Churchillian spirit 'I just carried
on'.

At the bottom turn there was a bit of other boat traffic so
I lifted and carved through a few tight gaps between a SUP
and a branch and went hard on the turn and up to the portage.
The only problem with this is you are more likely to make
mistakes when you are at your limit and as I got out at the
pontoon I dipped the boat edge and got a bucket full of water.
Lifted and tipped out ok but had lost the chance for a quick
portage. Last lap and we smoothly wash ride each other thinking
this is going down to a sprint finish. I am fine with that
having done plenty in training but know anything can happen.
So long as he doesn't go early I think. We go around the bottom
turn and he goes early. 800metre sprint in …oh joy. I
lock onto the bank side wash staying wide and deep. A boat
is ahead cutting across our path going towards the portage.
With a few shouts he stays left but it is difficult to lift
through the wash chop. I finally get clean water to accelerate
in and close on the line by the smallest of margins. I don't
think Peter Currie comes second often, a great competitor
and a testing race, worthy of all our efforts. There were
some great performances by the other WA paddlers but I was
otherwise engaged and saw nothing. I am always very grateful
to those who help and support and especially to Jenny Bateman
for running an excellent training group.

Australian Marathon
Championships

The Event is hosted by
the Burley Griffen Canoe Club from their site on the Molonglo
River just before it enters the lake central to Canberra city.
The river is quite narrow and has a line of red buoys down
the centre dividing craft travelling upstream or downstream.
This feature has opened up a different way of tactical racing
at these Championships.

Most of the team has taken the opportunity
to visit some of the many tourist destinations at our National
Capital.

The first practice days where quite
warm, but the race days are being a bit cooler and some slight
drizzle.

After the first race day WA has emerged
with quite a good haul of medals.

Race of the Week

Sandy's Easter
in Malaysia

April 4th,

Rest Day at Port Klang, 0km. I am starting to get to know
Malaysia a little now. I still have no idea about their food
though - she sells sea shells by the sea shore, but I dont
want to eat those! I discovered that when I land in a small
place, someone will eventually ask me where I am from and
will probably give me some help where needed to ensure my
safety overnight, like the guys who befriended me at Sungai
Borong and gave me a place to stay - champions. I like the
small friendly villages the best. I am not much of a city
person, but here in Port Klang there are many Tamil people
and I am feeling like a little bit of India is here. I used
my India skills today, like when asking 14 people along the
way so I could find the petrol station to get fuel for my
stove…crossing busy traffic roads - a breeze once you
have crossed a few streets in Kolkata or Mumbai. The guys
in my hotel are watching Tamil movies all day. There is one
thing missing though. Chai. Ice tea has had to replace Chai
for me for some time now, but you know, it is not just about
the drink, I have discovered that there are some countries
where people are welcomed with tea and Malaysia is not one.
I come from an English family where when someone comes, you
invite them to have a cuppa, you have a chat, you share. I
wonder who will next invite me for a cup of tea and where
that will be. Perhaps offers of tea could become as sporadic
and special to me as the opportunity for a bed or a shower
or a bit of shampoo in my hair. I’m back to the mangrove
coast tomorrow, but it seems the next bit is punctuated by
a lot of hotels…the adventure continues on the next High
Tide.
