Not having a race last weekend it meant that we all had a
chance to do something different. T2, Samatha Pilton and Keely
Robinson certainly did, they were in New Zealand improving
their paddling skills and having fun on some of the rivers.

We held our first Down River race around buoys on Tuesday
night. It's not whitewater, but it is a true test of skill
and speed which is needed when racing on whitewater. The buoy
course was set out with easy and difficult turns that required
good boat handling. One mistake, one wide turn and it can
soon lose you a few seconds.

Mark Lawson was the convincing winner with Peter Liddle second
and myself joint second. We were certainly pushed by Bonnie
who was only 4 seconds behind Peter and I. Thank god Pete
and I held her at bay. In the wavehopper class John Breed
was top dog. Results further down.

Next Tuesdays race is at Point Reserve, Bassendean at 5.45pm.

************************

This morning we again had 20 paddlers taking part in our
6.00am practise around the buoys. It heartening to see so
many paddlers take part so early in the morning. We finished
the morning with a race again. The race helps paddlers to
become more aggressive which is needed in whitewater racing.
Its good to see the improvement in the paddlers who only started
doing these sessions 3 weeks ago. Peter Liddle (DR) was equal
first with Bruce McWhirter who was paddling a wavehopper.
Bonnie was only 1 second behind them with Baillie 4 seconds
behind Bonnie. The girls are really giving the boys a run
for their money.

DR practise Friday morning 6.00am, Claughton Reserve, Bayswater.

These guys might look old and most are but
they sure can paddle fast. Not only are they fast in a kayak
they are a social bunch and love a laugh.

Back row. John Breed, Richard Mollick & Martin Watson.
Middle Row. Alan Moreby, Paul Phillips, Patrick Tullock &
Lawrence Venus. Front Row. The famous Steve Coffee and a young
guy I don't know.

Ric & Terri bought two Geckos from us 10

is!!)

Race of the Week

New Zealand
Paddling

T2 (Terry Brook), Sam Pilton and Keely
Robinson recently went over to New Zealand to do a spot of
paddling. They went to a paddle school to improve their paddling
skills and then paddled some of the rivers.

They had a great time.

Nightmare at
Scarp Pool - Dwellingup

The headlights flickered through the
forest and got closer. Loud shouts that turned into yahooing
sounds echoed down the valley. We were stunned as two cars
came speeding into our picnic area where we had camped. They
stopped only metres away and several guys and two girls stepped
out of the cars. They were completely drunk.

The party started to heat up and then
we heard the wooden toilets being demolished and then the
rubbish bins. They were in a frenzy. Minutes later we started
to hear a chopping sound and it just kept going.

We couldn’t sleep, only pray that
the idiots would get bored and leave. Suddenly the chopping
stopped and there was quiet. A moment later there was a creaking
sound and a whistling. My heart leapt as I realised that the
creaking was that of a huge, high tree falling and it was
falling down towards our tent. It whistled to the ground with
a big thud that shook the ground like a small earthquake.
I opened the tent door and was shocked to see the huge tree,
that took hundreds of years to grow lying helplessly on the
ground only metres away from our tent.

The John Muir
Trail

If you want to do a good
backpacking trip you can't get much better than walking the
John Muir Trail. On my 14,000km walk, cycle and kayak around
the USA, this 350km section in the Sierra Nevada mountains
was part of that expedition. I completed it in October which
is out of season for hikers so I saw few other backpackers
and the weather was just amazing.

Read about this trip;-
http://terrybolland.com/john-muir-trail/ [ http://terrybolland.com/john-muir-trail/ ]

The route had 14 mountain passes between
9700 feet and 14450 feet. It was hard work but stunning.

Eating nut and raisons

With views like this
all around me it was just magical.

To be out in the wilderness
watching th sun drop behind the mountains, the stars fill
up the night sky and the moon appear, it doesn't get much
better than that.

To carry everything in your backpack,
to feel the strain and pain of the steep mountain passes,
to take in the stunning views and then find the perfect camping
spot at the end of the day is not only magical but its character
building.
