West Australian Ben Pope has filled part of his dream to
represent Australia after being selected to take part in the
World Slalom Championships in Brazil. Ben has been training
hard in Penrith for the last two months so it paid off. Ben
has been selected in K1 and C1.Georgia Rankin (WA) was also
selected in the under 23 team in both K1 and C1.
Kynan Maley (WA) and Robin Jeffery (WA) were selected in
C1 for the senior team and Georgina Collin (WA) was selected
in K1 and Demelza Wall (WA) was selected in C1 in the junior
team.
The Junior and Under 23 team will travel to Brazil in April
to contest the Jnr/U23 World Championships, whilst the Senior
team will contest the World Cups before heading to Lee Valley
for the World Championships in September.

The third and last Tuesday night Down River race around the
buoys took place at Claughton Reserve and proved to be a tricky
course for some. Having two 180 degree turns amongst the twisty
course caught a few paddlers out making them do a much wider
turn than they should have done. There were however a couple
of long straights that the faster paddlers could take advantage
of.
After the the first run Bruce McWhirter and Mark Lawson were
a dead heat with me being the third fastest and Peter Liddle
4th. Bonnie and Baillie were also a dead heat as well coming
5th overall. The men were looking a bit worried after the
girls did so well.
On the second run Bruce went to the lead with Mark 2nd, me
3rd, Peter 4th, Bonnie 5th and Baillie 6th.
In the Wavehopper class it was Chris Hollier, Jason Gardiner
and Michael Liddle capturing the top places. Chris Hollier
who hadn't paddled a wavehopper 5 weeks ago seemed to be a
natural on his first go.
Unfortunately some of the Friday morning group couldn't make
Tuesday evening races.
Best of the three races: Mark Lawson was Ist male, Bonnie
was first female and Chris Hollier was Ist Wavehopper.

W.A. Marathon Champs
The WA Marathon Champs is a great event. It is a little different
from most events as you have to do a 80 metre portage about
4 times if you paddle a K1 (5.2m). The portage adds to the
excitement of the race.
For paddlers with longer boats you can also take part but
you don't have to portage.

Next Friday Morning
Basic to Advanced Flatwater Skills (for kayaks
under 4m no rudders)
Claughton Reserve, Katanning Street, Bayswater.
6.00am - 7.00am
To become a better skilled paddler, which is
an advantage in all types of paddling especially white water
and ocean, it is best to know and be able to do all the different
skills. We will be looking at those skills and improving them
so you have the edge over other paddlers who don't know how
to do them.
Sculling for support. If you have a good support
stroke or you are good at sculling, rarely do you capsize
It is necessary to have excellent flatwater
skills to be good at whitewater skills

Race of the Week
Cycling Canyon
Country (USA)
At the Grand Canyon
The vertical rain and horizontal
spray dampened my entry into the Grand Canyon National Park.
I was cold and being at 7000 feet high didn’t help matters,
but just as I arrived at the first canyon lookout the rain
stopped and the sun, which was setting, created a magnificent
sharp view of the canyon. I wheeled my bike over to the wall
and looked across the great ravine. A few clouds hovered above
the canyon and twin rainbows displayed the most awesome view
ever imaginable. Further along, where showers had developed,
rainbows were now scattered throughout the huge canyon. The
storm had left the air with a definite crispness and the fresh
fragrance from the vegetation had me inhaling beautiful fresh,
clean air. Inhaling deeply felt as if I was servicing my lungs.
Oh what a feeling. Having spent the last 5 thousand miles
cycling virtually through wilderness, my lungs in theory should
be at their best ever.
Walking down the Grand
Canyon
By looking down it was
hard to imagine how wide and deep the canyon was. I had to
focus, not on the whole incredible scene, but parts of it.
I looked at the first mile, studied it, looked at the next,
studied that and then when my mind could actually grasp the
enormity of the canyon, I took in the whole view. The canyon
was full of red and browns with tinges of white layers interspersed
throughout. Shadows were formed as the sun dipped in the sky.
The sun’s dying rays lit up parts of the gorge like a
fire, leaving islands of deep red, and steep-walled rock castles.
The immense size and grandeur created a realisation that was
very hard to sink in. In a way the canyon was baron, hostile
and forbidding, yet on the other hand it was so majestic and
beautiful.
At Zion National Park
As I cycled into the Zion
National Park the hills and mountains that were layered with
different colours, were striking to see. The day was perfect
and I kept stopping to admire the beauty under a very sunny
blue sky. I freewheeled down a winding hill looking at scenery
that was too amazing and stunning to describe. I stopped,
leaned my bike on a roadside rock wall that prevented cars
from going over the edge of the cliffs and falling into the
valley below. I looked on in amazement and took photographs.
The scene was just magical. It was certainly one of the most
impressive scenes that I have ever seen. Below the towering
vertical jagged mountains, 6000 – 7000 feet high, that
had a mixture of smooth shiny rock faces, crevices, buttresses
and massive tumbling boulders, grew sparse vegetation and
trees amongst the shaly slopes.
Huge arches were formed
in the mountain sides where the weaker rock over thousands
of years had given way. I could see the tops of bigger mountains
behind, with white summits that looked more like the nipples
of a woman’s breasts, rather than mountains. This was
truly a remarkable scene. I couldn’t feel anything but
extremely happy as I freewheeled down into the valley with
massive cliffs towering over me.
At Zion National Park
At Death Valley. 282ft
below sea level
I left the lowest point
in America with a dying thirst and cycled along the valley
surrounded by the dramatic scenery. Every kilometre a gully
carved its way down the Amargosa Range. The range was rugged,
dry and cruel. To be in the mountains without water in these
high temperatures of 40 degrees would be suicidal, but I had
no intentions in trying to find out. Behind the Amargosa Range
were the Funeral Mountains, a fitting reminder for me or others
not to get lost in the fiery, hot wilderness.
At June Lake
