Well it is a big week for Downwind paddlers with the Doctor
Race coming up this Saturday from Rottnest to
Sorrento. If
you are not paddling and you are not doing
anything on Saturday
afternoon it's always worth watching the
paddlers coming in
at Sorrento Beach.
Olympian Clint Robinson has been over since Monday night
doing a mass of coaching clinics. Even today,
Thursday he
has a full schedule. He has a rest day on Friday
and competes
in the Doctor Race on Saturday. I asked him what
training
he does now. He said apart from 6 weeks
intensive training
before the Molakai Race in Hawaii where he was
2nd, only 23
seconds behind Hank McGregor (3:35:17), he
relies on his past
skills and fitness to get him through. Clint won
the Molakai
races 3 times including 2013.
We had the pleasure of Clint staying with us for 3 nights
so I got to know him a little better. He is a
real family
man with two young children who he is very proud
of. He is
someone you can talk to with ease. Clint has 3
Olympic Medals,
32 Australian Kayak Championship Gold medals, 36
National
Gold medals in lifesaving and heaps of other
medals. You won't
find anyone else with so much experience willing
to give their
time to coaching others. With that much
experience it was
hard to imagine what he hadn't done but I did
manage to get
one over him though. He said he would never go
paddling around
the Kimberley Coast with the crocodiles and he
couldn't see
himself paddling 4000kms at one time.
Clint is not returning
to Queensland until Sunday afternoon so
he will have time to do a group coaching session
on Sunday
morning.
If you are interested is doing a 2 hour group
session, cost
$50.00 please let me know.
Time 7.30am - 9.30am. ascot Kayak Club. Call

at the 2004
Athens Olympics and is still in brand new
condition.

The top paddlers from all over
Australia and the world will be competing the
Doctor race
on Saturday
Tasmanian Tom Norton is back to paddle the
Doctor Race. Tom was 7th last year beating his
older brother.
His brother Sam is also competing this year. He
has just competed
in Hongkong and came 7th, so it is going to be
really interesting
to see which brother will come in first.
Ruth Highman usually wins the womens race
but some of the other girls are getting closer.
New Zealander
Rachel Clarke who won the ladies 2014 Molakai is
also racing.
It's always good viewing watching all the
paddlers arrive at the finish line.

On
a Sad Note
On a Sad Note
On Saturday 15th of November
a downwind ocean race was held in East London,
South Africa.
One of the paddlers, Mark Feather, was lost at
sea during
the event and was later found deceased 40 km
past the finish
on Monday morning.
Cellphone Tracked
The Johannesburg paddler went missing
after apparently completing almost the entire
race. His cellphone
was tracked close to the finish of Saturday’s
race but
he never reached the finish.
His damaged ski was found early on Sunday
in Morgan Bay, some twenty kilometres beyond the
race finish.
Once it was clear that he had not reached
the finish safely the organisers convened a
massive search
effort that included land, sea and air based
spotters. They
were joined by numerous other aircraft and boats
supplied
by concerned members of the public, entirely at
their own
expense.
The search party did not relent in its
efforts on Sunday as hopes of finding Feather
safe and in
good health dimmed with over 200 people made up
of paddlers
and the community assisted the local NSRI to
continue the
search on the beach as well as in the air.

Kimberley Kayaking
1982
Solo - 100 Days along
the Kimberley Coast
My first sight of real
tidal rapids was when I entered King Sound in
1982. These
huge 2m standing waves give you an idea of how
fast the current
goes in the King Sound.
The Kimberley has the
second highest tides in the world attaining over
10 metres.
Every six hours the tide streams in and out so
there is always
movement in the tide. I think it would have the
fastest tidal
currents in the world.
This photo was taken
at Hells Gate on the west side of King Sound
Looking across at the
massive whirlpool and boils the day after the
current nearly
dragged me into them after paddling into the
area.
