Our white water season this year started in June like it once used to do and it has been steady ever since. With another good downpour hitting Perth and the southwest more recently, the whitewater season up to now has been a good one. Even the Wellington Dam is overflowing on the Collie River. We haven't had floods but for many paddlers who have taken the opportunity to get on the river, this season has been fun. So far all the winter slalom events have been held on white water, which is great for the junior paddlers coming into the sport and going to nationals. As you can imagine they don't have an all year round white water slalom course like the Sydney paddlers have, so when they are competing at Penrith they are certainly disadvantaged. For the play boaters the year hasn't been super good but if you have beeen in the right place at the right time it hasn't been too bad either.

Of course the Avon Descent this year had pretty good water level and paddlers at the Wild Water Championships were also happy that there was a downpour a few days before the event to lift the river.

Last Sunday the Avon water level rose again to 0.74 so I went to Walyunga to have a little play on the Chute wave. Not as good as playing down the Lower Murray or the Frankland rapids but it was a bit of fun with the time I had to spare. The Schools Slalom Championships were held at Walyunga at the same time and I was really impressed to see 34 young paddlers, and I was more impressed to see that 16 of them were girls. There must be more girls in slalom than in any other discipline in WA. Slalom paddling is a great discipline to in-still confident and skill. When these young paddlers start paddling wild water kayaks or playboats, watch out as they will be awesome paddlers.

For parents with young children 11 or above slalom is a great sport to get them involved in. Ascot Kayak Club and Swan Canoe Club have very good programs. One day we will get a white water park so lets hope these juniors will be able to take advantage of it when it comes. Paddlers like WAs Robin Bell, Robbie Jeffries and Kynan Maley, who represented Australia at the Olympics developed their skills in WA but they eventually had to move to Sydney to have the right water to train on. It would be great to see our top slalom paddlers be able to stay at home to train.

White Water Park

For fourteen years Canoeing Western Australia has been promoting the concept of an artificial whitewater course for Perth, an exciting development that would add a major point of difference to the city.

More and more of these facilities are being constructed around the world and a number of developers have indicated possible interest in our proposal and the dream may be getting a little closer..

But questions asked include:

What exactly is an artificial whitewater course? Where are they found? What is their purpose? Who do they benefit?

To illustrate the answers, Canoeing WA has produced a two-minute video encapsulating the ethos and the advantages that a whitewater centre can bring to a city – and could especially bring to Perth.

Perth boasts a superb climate and many suitable sites for such a venture.

The video has today been distributed to a number of landholders, local councils, government departments and developers who will now gain a clear understanding of the benefits of a top-drawer new attraction in their locality.

After the London Olympics, GHD Pty Ltd prepared an extremely robust Functional Brief on the project. Interested parties can view the document by arrangement at our Canoeing WA offices.

We are very confident that a whitewater park would be a significant addition to Perth and Western Australia’s attractions.

It will be a unique opportunity for developers or government to leave a legacy of fun – and to offer essential swift water rescue training in this state.

2014 Olympic Hopes Sprint Team

On Sunday, the West Australian athletes part of the 2014 Olympic Hopes Sprint team departed for overseas to train and compete at the Olympic Hopes Regatta in Slovakia.

Western Australia have seven athletes representing Australia, these are;

Ben Harris (U17 Men)
Yale Steinepreis (U17 Women)
Anthony Carbone (U16 Men)
Luke Morton and Toby Digney (U15 Men)
Monique Carbone and Demi O'Brien (U15 Women)

These seven will compete at the Olympic Hopes Regatta in Peistany, Slovakia from the 12 - 14 September.

The Australian team is one of the biggest Olympic Hopes teams AC have sent overseas, consisting of 34 athletes across three age categories.

Canoeing Down Under proudly sponsored Anthony & Moniquie Carbone with an Epic K1 when they first started paddling seriously. CDU also gave a small amount of sponsorship through our junior sponsorship program to two other paddlers. It's great to see them improve over the years.

Stories

The Frankland River

Mark Tait

Myself, (Mark Tait) Mike Collister, Hew Roberts and Patch White were thinking of a bump and scrape on a Lower Murray trip until Hew noticed the Frankland River was rising toward 30 cumecs. After a flurry of text messages, we were organised, boats were loaded and we left Perth on Saturday afternoon. After dinner in the Bridgetown pub we carried on to Fernhook falls were we rolled out the swags for the night in the campers kitchen. An awesome evening with a bottle of red, fantastic stars and the noise of quacking frogs to put us to sleep.

Sunday morning we did a car shuffle, leaving Hew's ute at the 4WD track take out and then driving to put in at Boronia road. The paddle takes about 4 hours and includes lot of magnificent South West Karri forest and some nice granite rapids. The first is a grade 4 beauty with a couple of meaty holes and nice lines, the second one of note is a 3 metre water fall. The rest of the trip is fairly straight forward grade 2 white water, with calm pools in between.

The drive home was long but satisfying, after a great day on a seldom run section of the river.
