The Avon Descent is drawing closer but you would never know it. I haven't seen or heard any publicity about it and by the time there is some publicity, it will be too late to encourage new paddlers to take part. The Avon Descent committee really need to get on top of their marketing as there is less and less paddlers becoming interested in this unique event, it seems that anyone outside of paddling doesn't know about it!

*****************************************

Luke Dooly and his mum drove home to Kalbarri on Sunday after Luke and I paddled my Epic K2 in the early morning. It was Luke's first time in a double kayak and he loved it. Whilst we were on the water Luke's mum Jane sat on the rock beside the river reading. She heard a big crack, so she jumped up to see a man smashing her car side window. He had tried screwdriving her door lock before then. As soon as he saw her approaching he jumped in his car and screeched off. Jane managed to get the registration number but the plates had been stolen the previous day. It was a white station wagon. I have heard of other cars being been broken into at different places along the river. Make sure you don't leave any valuables in your car.

At Saturday's fitness training Luke, a bit wiser to racing did a lot better time than he did the week before, so he was happy. He also took part in the Buoys race at Ascot that afternoon and loved it. Luke, who I thought was 14 years old in fact was only 13. He said it was one of the best holidays he has ever had and the paddlers had been so friendly.

His next race is at the Canoe and Cray Carnival in Kalbarri, his home town, on May 31st - 1st June. His said, when he got back home, the Murchison River had changed colour because there was water from all the rain running through the gorges.

Luke Dooly and I early Sunday morning paddling doubles

The good thing about living near the river is that I can paddle whenever I want, I can walk along, cycle along it and check out all other paddlers training. Take Sunday afternoon for instance. As I was cycling along Ashfield flats I spotted John Carrol doing a sneaky paddle in the late afternoon's setting sun. When John started paddling 2 years ago he kept falling off his PRS, now he is winning races so he has come a long way in that time. He is also a better runner and cyclist.

John Carrol out for a sneaky Sunday afternoon paddle and trying to keep fitter than his opposition.
He had his mountain bike stolen off his car whilst visiting friends a couple of weeks ago.
