We are doing Avon Assessments this weekend

**************************************

You could call it a miracle. Last week we had enough rain to lift the river levels. We were busy doing assessments but many other paddlers managed to get a valley trip in or at least Walyunga to Bells. So the excitement continues.

Apart from the odd paddler, most who did the assessment was pretty good. It was amazing to see the improvement in all paddlers in such a short time. The assessments are so important for novices and when you see them improve and develop skills in front of your eyes you know it is all worth while.

**************************************

Two weeks ago I strained my back lifting a heavy trailer so my paddling came to a halt and due to all the cold mornings in the last three weeks and being weak-willed I haven't spent much time in a boat lately.

I have been praying for my back to get better but now I have caught the dreaded man-flu. I'm sure that all the men out there will understand how sick I am at the moment and how I need some sympathy. Most women don't seem to have any sympathy!

Rescue

Darter Rescue

On Saturday 20 July 2013, three of us, Barbara, Lorraine and I paddled upriver from the kayak club towards the Guildford Rd road and rail bridges. We just cleared the railway bridge when Barbara called to Lorraine that a female darter on the riverbank appeared to have fishing line around its beak. Lorraine paddled over and I paddled back to see that the bird not only had fishing line around its beak, but was unable to straighten its neck fully because of more fishing line tangled there. The bird flew past me, and I paddled slowly towards it, but it disappeared under the surface of the water. By the time Lorraine arrived at the spot, it had surfaced and was sitting on the riverbank but then flew to a nearby tree.

Barbara and I decided that with the ability to swim and fly our chances of coming to the darter's assistance were next to impossible. Lorraine stayed back and talked softly to the bird; we've noticed that if we say 'took, took, took' to a darter that's about to dive or fly away as we pass, it seems to settle them. She also tried to explain that we only wanted to help.

We continued on for a few hundred metres more and then turned to head home. The darter was still in the tree, and again Lorraine stopped to talk to the bird, explaining that it really had only one chance of survival, and that was to trust her. Barbara and I had paddled on in search of some much-needed sunshine and Lorraine soon caught us up. A kilometre or so further on, Lorraine heard a loud splash as something fell from a tree and saw a pelican circling whatever had fallen. She paddled over and found the darter in the water. It dived and came up on the other side of her kayak where it let her pick it up and put it in her kayak.

Lorraine called for me to turn back, and asked another paddler, a stranger, whether he could help by finding scissors or a knife. He came back with a blunt knife a fisherman supplied and started cutting some of the strands of line I'd managed to isolate. Barbara arrived shortly after with a sharper knife and a few minutes later about 20 strands of line, a bent hook, swivel and sinker had been removed from the bird's serrated beak. The line that had been around its neck must have come off when it fell into the water.

What made it follow Lorraine is anyone's guess. What made it splash into the water to attract attention is a mystery. What made it understand that we wouldn't hurt it is something we'll never know. If I hadn't seen it, I'd have trouble believing it.

Lorraine put the darter on the stranger's kayak where it gave a couple of loud calls and flew off.

We'd met at 7.00 o'clock that morning with the temperature around 2 degrees and there were more than a couple of 'what are we doing here' type questions. Now we know!
