Peter Martin with his group of young racing paddlers trying out slalom type kayaks for the first time. After paddling long racing boats, that go in a straight line, they just loved paddling these kayaks in circles.

Most of the clubs have junior programs so if you have a child above 9-10 years old why not try them in paddling?

Mirage 580

Five Mirage 580s heading across glassy waters to Cockatoo Island in the Kimberley

The Original Mirage 580 is still the most popular sea kayak. Two new 580s been developed, one is called the 582 and the other a 580 Sport. The 580 Sport which is virtually the same as the 580 is built in a strong but lighter construction.

The Lightweight 580 Sport is the newest addition to the 580 range of kayaks available from Mirage.

The Lightweight 580 Sport has been designed by Australians for Australian conditions and is the perfect high speed fitness touring kayak. It is as much at home in the calm of enclosed waters or in choppy off shore conditions. If you're going to be landing on unknown rocky beaches or paddling over mangrove stumps, you should have a look at the new Mirage 582 kayak.

The Lightweight 580 Sport clearly sets the benchmark for kayaks for sheer speed, acceleration and outstanding stability in all water conditions. It is the 'thoroughbred' of the long waterline kayak class.

The 580 Sport gives the paddler a versatile, stable boat with excellent tracking in all conditions from flat water to tough ocean passages.

High cruising speeds can be maintained over an extended period, meaning you get to where you need to be faster and burning less energy. This kayak can go and has gone virtually anywhere and everywhere and is extremely stable in all conditions.

Weighing only 17.5kg, the Lightweight 580 Sport is extremely fast in all types of water. From inland river and dam paddling to open water paddling, the 580 Sport has all the attributes of the Standard 580 kayak, plus being so light it is even faster and easier to handle both on and off the water.

The Lightweight 580 Sport is constructed of a Kevlar hull and deck, and using the latest sandwich construction with Nomex between Kevlar internal and external skins.

Shells are vacuum bagged and heat cured in the mold, using the latest European medium temperature curing epoxy resin, and includes an external taped seam as standard on all kayaks.

Many of the original 580s have travelled thousands of kilometres - including a non-stop straight line Bass Strait crossing by Stuart Truman in 2008. Expeditions done in Australia also include 800km from Sydney to the Gold Coast, 1200km from Esperance to Perth, 1150km from Sydney to Hobart as well as a large number of 310km Bass Strait crossings from Victoria to Tasmania.

Colours

The Lightweight 580 Sport is available in a choice of 6 solid deck colours.

Price depends on construction - Please call us.

Specs: With its high-volume watertight compartments, the 580 is capable of carrying all the gear you will need for an extended expedition.

Length: 5.8 m
Beam: 55.5 m
Weight: 17.5 kg Kevlar

The 582 is also available

By using the float as an outrigger it helps with stability

Wet exits happen. And when they do, this proven paddle float inflates and attaches quickly and securely to your paddle to get you back where you belong. It features single-chamber construction, combined with a high-flow valve to speed up inflation and deflation time, and mesh-sided sleeves that drain water fast.

Inflates Fast: High-flow air valve for quick deployment and packing.
Mesh Sleeves: Retain your paddle without retaining water.
Secure Attachment:
Simply slide on paddle blade and clip in place.
The float acts as an outrigger and it helps with stability.
Whistle in buckle.

Sleek bag that attaches to your bungies on your kayak or ski.
Practise getting back in your kayak to understand its limitations.
It's much harder to get back in your kayak in rougher waters than when in calm conditions.

Stories

Albany Coastline 1979

Paddling through the surf west of the Gap, Albany

As part of my Kimberley training (1982) I used to head south virtually every other weekend to paddle sections of the coastline between Albany and Busselton. Although it was very different water conditions that I would be experiencing in the Kimberley, it was important that I got used to fending for myself. 99% of my early training was done alone, as in those days there were very few paddlers who ventured out to sea.

When the first real sea kayaks came to W.A. in the late 1970s there were but a handful of paddlers who took up the sport. The Anas Acuta (above orange) and the Nordkapp (above yellow) were two of the first kayaks to be paddled here. With the Anas Acuta having no storage areas and less storage space it turned out to be more of a day trip boat rather than an expedition kayak. The Nordkapp became the expedition kayak but there were very few paddlers in WA who ventured into the wild ocean so it was hard to find experienced paddlers to join me. Occasionally Austin Mullen (above) would join me on some of the easier paddles.

The Nordkapp didn't come with the rudder but it didn't take me long to realise it paddled a lot better when I put a rudder on it. It saved me a lot of energy that I had to use to keep the kayak straight in heavy winds.

Austin Mullen paddling out through manageable surf not far from The Gap in an Anas Acuta Kayak, one of the first manufactured fibreglass sea kayaks.

The Nordkapp on the left I built myself in 1981. I made it much heavier than the shop manufactured kayak (right) as on my first expedition around the Kimberley Coast I was alone for 100 days, so I needed it to withstand all the bumps and scapes across reefs and rocks. Unfortunately for long expeditions the Nordkapp didn't have the same storage space as kayaks like the Mirage 580s that came out much later, so some gear was piled on top.

Not long after this photo was taken (1988) Ewen's kayak on the right was attacked twice by a crocodile. The boat survived and so did Ewen!

The Excitement of the Surf Hasn't Changed in 31 Years

A Trip To WAs South Coast 1981

After paddling around the Gap/Natural Bridge area for the last two days we checked the surf from the top of the high sand cliffs. The surf looked big. After paddling the rough seas and big surf exits and landings the previous days Austin decided he wasn't skilled enough to paddle today. With Austin's help we lowered the kayak down the steep sand cliff to the beach. The surf looked a lot bigger at ground level than it looked on top of the cliff, and it looked pretty big then.

The waves were barrelling in and with an average of 8 or 9 wave sets, breaking some 200 metres out it looked pretty scary. However I just had to get through the surf, carrying my kayak back up the steep, high sand cliff was just too hard for me to contemplate and I had to get used to fending for myself in more violent conditions.

I waited for the smaller wave sets to come in and took off. I didn't get through many wave sets before the high waves returned. I fought through wave after wave but then got hurled back towards the beach and had to fight through another wave before being pushed back again. I was gaining no headway and the waves were still attacking me. Eventually as one of the big waves hurled me backwards I was helter-sheltered and capsized. I thought oh shit but rolled up quickly just before the next wave hit me broadside.

I kept my cool and managed to make a break for it but another big wave rolled me backwards sucking my stern down like it was being sucked into a whirlpool. I was capsized again. I rolled up, blew the water from my face, gained my composure and took off towards another steep wave. The kayak started to get vertical, real vertical. I had my doubts that I would get over it, but by some miracle the kayak kept getting more vertical until finally it slipped over the lip. I was in mid-air for a few moments before the kayak smashed down.

I gathered momentum and made a break over several more large waves, smashing through and over them until finally I was safely out to sea. It had taken me over 10 minutes of really hard yakka to get from beach to the open sea so I was quite pleased to be in the open ocean even if it was bumpy. At sand level Austin said he lost sight of me several times and from the cliff top Jenny and Karen were able to watch the whole ordeal unfold.

And this was just the start of the day!

The Dreamtime Voyage

The Dreamtime Voyage is Paul Caffyn's story of one of the most remakable journeys ever undertaken by kayak - the first kayak circumnavigation of Australia, a 9420 mile epic in 1982.

It is an inspirational tale of one man's dogged determination to fulfill his impossible dream against all odds, including tropical cyclones, raging surf, sharks, crocodiles, sea snakes and long sections of sheer limestone cliffs.

The narrative is a blend of early maritime history, exciting dramatic moments, descriptions of the harshness and beauty of the vast Australian landscape, interaction with the coastal dwellers at work and play and humerous interludes with his New Zealand support crew.

Cost $40.00

Peter Robinson

Back in the late 70s Peter Robinson above was a very good junior paddler, especially in slalom kayaking. He paddled alot with Lindsay Binning and Ian Vincent who were very highly ranked juniors in Australia.

Here he is playing canoe polo with Roger Smith, Glen Munro and others.

In the early 80s Peter joined the workforce and consequently stopped kayaking, got tranferred overseas but just recently he has returned to WA and started paddling again but now, he goes with his two sons.

2012 - After a long spell out of the kayak, Peter left, is paddling with one of his sons Cameron. It is great to see paddlers from the past come back to kayaking.
