The shark attack on the ski this week has probably put a few doubts in some paddler's minds about paddling on the ocean. When I was paddling in the Kimberly, back when I was a lot younger, sharks hitting the kayak was a common occurrence and I became used to them. Luckily for me the sharks just rammed the kayak rather them having a chew.

It was probably one of those one-in-a-million incidents and paddlers shouldn't get too worried about it happening again. Remember, at least we have a good big river system to paddle in.

We had our first lot of Avon Descent Assessments last weekend so many paddlers got a tiny taste of small rapids and how cold it is in the water. Just remember you might think you are warm blooded but you can get very cold on and in the river!

We have more assessments running this weekend. See details below.

Josh couldn't paddle at the Marathon Championships last Saturday because of a Uni exam but he did paddle in a K2 with Darryl Long on Sunday and won the Marathon Double Kayak Championships. Well done guys.

Leonie Cockman, who has paddled with me on two Canadian trips is starting up a new paddle touring business. The launch is this weekend. Leonie will be mainly operating around the city area but she will be also organising private trips further afield. The double kayaks she will be using are Mission 490s which are pictured below.

T2s last day is on Saturday (although he will not be working on Friday). He will be doing the Saturday afternoon assessments and leaving for the north on Monday.

We will be having a get together when he returns after his first 4 week shift up north so keep your eyes on what's happening!

************************

T2s last Monday night training session was extremely well attended with 40 or more paddlers turning up. There were lights all over the place on the river as the different levels of paddlers battling around varying distances to be the first back to the finish line.

A bbq was kindly put on and organised by Steve Coffey, his wife Deborah and Alan Moreby. They had prepared an amazing spread which was waiting when we got off the water.

T2, Alaine and myself. We have worked closely together 6 days a week for five years and get on extremely well. With our part-timers Josh, Samatha, Steve and Adrian, all great people and paddlers, CDU has had an amazing team working in the shop.

Alaine gets the group to cuddle together for a photo shoot.

The session was started a few years ago by T2 to give our CDU paddling group another night to train. T2 developed it into a focus of truly fitness and fun. It soon attracted paddlers with higher fitness levels from out of our CDU groups. Nevertheless the session catered for all levels and became a big success.

It has always been a condition for paddlers to take part in this training session to wear a PFD and a light.

Whilst everyone else is rugged up for the cold T2 has bare arms. He's tough.

Ace 445

Now-a-days paddlers are buying boats to paddle the Avon Descent that are slim, long and unstable so they can go faster but for many paddlers they are not the best craft as novices capsize a lot more. The 445 is slower, but it is much more stable and novices feel a lot more confident when paddling it.

The 445 is a very popular touring kayak for flat water rivers, estuaries and calm ocean conditions. It is also a popular kayak used in the Avon Descent.

It is relatively fast, stable and would suit a recreational paddler who was just wanting a good touring kayak.

The 445 has a kick-up rudder system but they are available without a rudder.

Length: 4.45 m
Beam: 0.60 m
Weight: 23 kg
Made in England

Price: $1400.00

Special: $1290.00

This Weekend White Water Assessments and Trip

We will still be running the Saturday morning fitness session at 7.15am.

What you will need if you want to do your Avon Descent Assessment this weekend.

Boat
Paddle
PFD
Helmet
Footwear
(Spraydecks for kayaks).

Wear warm clothing

Warm clothing is essential. You will be swimming in the water. After a capsize or two in the water you will get very cold. If it rains or the wind is blowing up the river you'll get even colder. Remember when learning the white water skills you are not working hard, so if you don't have enough clothing on you will sit there and shiver.

It is essential not to wear cotton as when it gets wet it stays wet. Best to wear thermals, sharkskin tops and a paddling cag or clothing that is similar.

On your lower body wear neoprene pants, Sharkskin bottoms, thermals or clothing that is similar. Kayakers may wear neoprene shorts and thermal long johns but ski paddlers really need long pants.
Neoprene and Sharkskin pants will also protect your legs when capsized or being swept down the river.

Be prepared, bring spare warm clothing.
Cost for the 3 hour Assessment Course is $90.00 which includes entry to the Walyunga National Park.
