I was a little disappointed that I didn't manage to publish 6 books this birthday year but I did manage to paddle the 6000kms, publish 3 books with 2 other books close to being published so considering all the other things that happened, the year didn't finish up too bad. I also managed to pick up the Olegas Trehanas Award, take part in several races, cut the lawn 10 times, weed the garden, chop and prune several trees and even go out for a few Sunday lunches. So life was good.

Sunday was the end of a perfect year, well apart from a severe drop in sales, my web site being hacked and having to move the shop. It didn't really matter though as when I arrived at Ascot Kayak Club at 9.00am I only had 10kms to paddle to reach my 6000km mark. I saved the 10kms especially for my birthday.

Paddlers gather to paddle the last 10kms

It was good to see a few paddlers who were going to paddle those last kilometres with me and I appreciated them taking the time to be there. It's not everyday I paddle that far in a year, although thinking about it I have done it a few times before, but this was special I was 61 and supposingly over the hill.

We all took off heading upstream towards Barkers Bridge. A few paddlers thought they might not keep up (Alaine) but it wasn't a race so everybody did. After paddling nearly 6000kms I was feeling refreshed and not a bit tired. It was really great to be paddling at a social pace and talking to other paddlers who were interested in my achievement.

6000kms - The last paddle strokes

It was a very enjoyable paddle but when I had finished it felt as if I was losing my claim to the river which I had paddled on for five hours virtually every day in the last 6 weeks.

Many thanks to Alaine, Lawrence, Christopher, Matthew & Nicholas Greed, Murray Corp, Ron Mckenzie, Aaron Jenkins & Ron, Simon Haywood, Graham, Sharon & Steve Patrick Irwin, Warren Southwell, Alan Moreby and the great Steve Coffey for coming along and supporting me.

It's all over - Should I try for 6100kms on my 61st year!!!!

We're settling into our new shop, but it is a lot smaller than the other, so are having difficulty fitting all the boats and trailers into the space we have.

Ace 515

Avon Descent Here We Come

T2 and Markus at Devil's Slide, Bells Rapid

The Ace 515 is an excellent double for general touring, estuaries, gentle sea kayaking, and perfect for the Avon Descent. The 515 is really the only plastic double kayak that is suited for the Avon Descent. Great choice if you want to have fun paddling with a partner.

The 515 is stable yet relatively fast. With two enclosed cockpits the Explorer 515 can take spraydecks and handle the rougher water conditions that the open cockpit double kayaks can not.

The 515 can be purchased with or without a rudder. Ample storage space to carry gear for weekend camping trips. Fitted with backstraps, toggles for carrying and rescuing and fixed foam buoyancy blocks.

Length: 515cm
Beam: 64cm
Weight: 28kg
Made in England

Price: $1990.00

Double MultiSport

The Double Multisport Kayak prototype is now in production. This double kayak is faster than the Ace 515 plastic double but as it is more unstable it will need more skill level to paddle it. This kayak will be great for the more experienced paddler and a lot more durable than a fibreglass model.

Price: $1990.00

6000kms and It's All Over

(for this year)

Ascot Waters after the fog

It was hard getting up at 4.45am every morning, for 6 weeks, but once I got used to it - it wasn't so bad!
(I can't believe I'm saying that)

With the fog the trees were dripping

The cooler weather didn't seem to affect the birdlife - an Ibis and Purple Swamphen

A cobweb caused by the fog

An eagle takes a rest
