Well I'm back home.

At The World Masters Canoe Marathon Championships

There were some good results. Although competition was tough.

Time for a paddle.

Monday 1st September 2025

First off the line on day one was the 65 plus paddlers with WAs Dave Berglund about to shoot off and then it was mine and Robin's turn in the 70 plus. With Dave’s age group going first it meant we could see what was going on with paddlers trying to reverse towards the long pontoon. Students were position on the pontoon to hold on to the boats. At least one paddler fell in trying to reverse.

After that group had gone it was our turn. Being a bit older than Dave’s group we had more experience so there were no capsizes just one or two paddlers who had difficulty reversing their K1!

I had a good start, but most of the paddlers on our line went off faster. With about 16 paddlers in front of me being faster and another 6 slower paddlers behind me I didn't have anyone my speed to wash ride although I wasn't far back from a few paddlers in front, but not close enough to catch up. I noticed one of the paddlers was a guy I had a duel with last year. I was hoping to catch him but I didn't.

With the steep walls lining much of the course the conditions at times were testing - so different from Perth, but I felt good and had no trouble with my balance.

Due to paddling a SUP for the last 9 months and doing more kilometres than speed, I had an idea that I wouldn't be as quick as previous years, but it still hurts when your result is not as good as you would have liked. My competition seemed to be stronger this year as well, but that might have been because younger paddlers had entered my class, less average paddlers had come to race and I was one of the oldest in the group! But that's racing. So I didn't do as well as other years coming 17th out of 23, however I had another great experience.

Unfortunately for the double races we had to rent a Nelo K2 which was just too narrow and high spirited for Robin and I to paddle in the choppy water that rebounded off the steep walls. In the flat section we were okay, but the rebound waves made it too difficult and we would more likely be swimming. We tried to find another more stable kayak without success so we decided not to paddle in K2 event.

Nishani and I gave the mixed doubles a go in the same kayak. We were in the 35 to 45 age group with the likes of World Champion Hank Macgregor and his wife. Unfortunately we were far from competitive and in the way of others so after one lap we decided to pull out. It was a shame but when you can't take the kayak you know you can paddle things don't always go as planned.

Many of our Master's Team had some good results.

It was pretty exciting watching the world's best race.

It was a great venue.

In the long course race Mads Pedersen on the right was over 1 minute ahead of his competition after the second lap and he stayed in front despite a pack trying to catch him up. He is amazing. Andrew Birkett was 2nd, 1 min.37 secs behind.

In the women's long course race Melina Andersson (Sweden) in the yellow beat Hungarian Vanda Kiszli. Australia's Rebecca Mann in white on the left was 4th.

IOP Summer Series Race 2 is just around the corner.

Date - October 5th, 2025

Ozone LONG COURSE -
Dutchies to Sorrento SLSC, 20km's.

Refreshments and food in the Sorrento Surf Club after the race.

Race check in is at Dutchies from 12.30pm, with race commencing at 2pm. Race briefing at 1.30pm.

Leg leash, PFD, PLB, Phone, and 4 flares or EVDS. MANDATORY for all racers on the LONG Course going forward.

Race entry and Fees

If you are a Paddle W.A. member you must enter your PA number in when registering to avoid an insurance fee.

The race cost is $25 for IOP members. There is an option for IOP members to select which will apply the $20 discount, which is only valid for current IOP members.
Non members have a race day surcharge of $24, ($12 for U18's) so take the opportunity to sign up with PA and IOP before you register to avoid insurance costs every time you race.
The $25 fee helps cover water safety.

Last year’s Family K4 had 7 boats on the water – the largest K4 gathering in WA – and it was an amazing spectacle. Let’s make it even bigger this year!
