NEW! Canoe Slalom Paddle Passport – 8-Week Kids Program has started.

Got a young adventurer aged 8–14? Looking for a fun, safe way to get them active and outdoors? Join our Canoe Slalom Paddle Passport program at Ascot Kayak Club – a great introduction to kayaking with real skills and plenty of fun!

What’s included?

Learn slalom strokes & gate navigation

Practice capsize, wet exit & boat recovery

Learn to set up boats and gear

Receive a Paddle Passport – stamped each week

My Diary

Friday 9^th

6.45pm – Finished 12.10 km paddle making it 25.45 kms for the day.

Should have done less kilometres and saved myself for tomorrow’s race, but I have to keep up the kilometres to be on top of the world this month.

7.15 pm. Started dinner. Jenny is in the UK visiting her 85 year old mum and family. Found what looked like mince and vegetables dish in the freezer. I cooked it up with spaghetti.

7.45 pm. Noticed it had Leena’s meal on the side of the container. Did I just eat dog food? If I did it tasted good!

8.00 pm. Took Leena for a walk. The moon shone on the river and through the trees.

8.30 pm. Watched Sherwood. Did some computer work.

11.00 pm. Went to bed.

12.00 pm. Leena came into bedroom and woke me up to go out for a poo.

Saturday 10th.
3.00 am. Leena came into the bedroom again wanting attention.
3.10 am. I try to sleep.

4.15 am. Leena came into the bedroom again wanting attention or wanted an early breakfast.

5.50 am. Got up, fed Leena and had breakfast.

6.25 am. Took Leena for a walk.

6.55 am. Drove to Bayswater to the Ramon Race.

8.15 am. Start of Race. Wave 3 on SUP

8.16 am. Declan already in front. Bugger!

8.40 am. Paddling around Ron Courtney Island. Declan 200 metres ahead and getting further away.

8.47 am. It looks as if Declan is slowing down. I hope so.

8.55 am. I’m closing the gap and catching Declan. I'm beginning to feel much happier.

9.12 am. I have caught Declan. He is only a few metres ahead. I will wash ride for a while. Yippee.

9.19 am. I pass Declan. I expected him to keep with me, but I get ahead. What a great day it is!

9.28 am. Low footbridge in Ascot Waters. I lie flat to get under. Still 50 metres ahead. The day only gets better.

9.33 am. I cross the finish line 27 seconds ahead of Declan. He has beaten me in the last two marathon races, I beat him at Mandurah so it’s good to get another win. Distance with warm up and down - 13.48 kms. Time taken in race 1:18:34.7

Happy times. Yippee I beat Declan.

10.45 am. Received my Ramon medal and winners cheque!!

11.20 am. Welcomed home by my dog Leena. She was so excited about my win.

12.30 pm. Lunch.

1.00 pm. Vacuumed sofa (for dog hair) and carpets etc.

1.20 pm. Washed floors etc.

1.45 pm. More cleaning. What a good husband I am!

2.15 pm. Water plants.

3.15 pm. Took Leena to the fenced dog area for a run.

4.15 pm. Went paddling SUP 13.07 kms. Moon bright. 26.55 kms for the day.

7.15 pm. Cooked dinner.

8.15 pm. Took Leena for a walk.

9.00 pm. Oh god. When is Jenny back from the UK? I need a rest!

24 Hour Canoe-athon 1979

Over 50 Years of Challenges

I have checked the distance with my Garmin and unfortunately the circuit mentioned isn't as long as 9.2 kms, so I would have paddled 200 kms or a little more instead of 220kms. The organiser probably measured the distance from a map book with a piece of string?

I was in a 4.5 metre Wild Water Kayak without a rudder and not in a K1.
