Well what a week. We have had the West Australian Canoe & SUP Championships. I competed in the K1, K2 and the SUP races. The K1 and SUP races were on Saturday and it was extremely hot and on Sunday a storm had brought very strong winds for the K2 event.
I had three pretty good races and won two silvers and a bronze in the SUP.
With the portage ramps all finished it was good practise for many paddlers and a spectacle for spectators.
Although we had 94 paddlers in the champs, and we have a really good marathon calendar with regular races and excellent coaches there was only one competitive women in the ICF open and one women in the under 23. Not only that there were only 4 paddlers in the Men's ICF Open and 2 of them were over 35 years old and another under 19. So what's going on? How do we attract more younger
people?
The Australian Championships start on Thursday next week, with the SUP long distance race and the general race taking place, although the work on the venue starts on Tuesday, so I might not get a newsletter out as I could be too busy helping and taking part in 7 races.
Friday and Saturday are going to be the best viewing for the single races, with the doubles being on Sunday.
My best reward for the month was having paddled the most SUP kilometres in the world that are recorded. This was my 5th month being at the top. This
month I paddled 660 kms on a SUP and over 100 kms in a kayak
