I have now been on hormone therapy for my prostate cancer for 9 weeks and it has reduced my PSA levels (prostate specific antigen) to a much lower level. Although that is very encouraging I still have to go through 33 sessions of radiation in three weeks’ time to try to kill the cancer. My radiation
treatment last year didn’t hit the target so it made no effect and my PSA levels continued to rise, but scans this year seem to have given my doctor a better idea to where the cancer is hiding. So fingers crossed.
After the radiation I will still be on hormone therapy until the end of June and apparently the side effects will continue for another 6 months once treatment has finished.
So a lot more hot flushes or is it just the hot weather giving me sweaty moments!!
Next Friday I will be in South Australia competing in the Australian Canoe Marathon Championships so unfortunately I won’t be able to send out a newsletter as I will be a bit busy.
Derek Cross, Nishani and I are paddling K1 and SUP. The organisers have changed the program from when we entered so now we have to paddle the long course in K1 in the morning and the long course on the SUP in the afternoon and then paddle doubles the following morning and race SUPs in the afternoon. Not the best timetable, but I did similar at the State Champs and survived.
So I will be paddling 3 events in kayaks and 3 events on a SUP.
It's going to be a busy three days.
After we finished racing on Saturday at the State Marathon Champs, 5 of the big red buoys that we have to mark out the course were stolen. This wasn't realised until Sunday morning day two of the event so some quick action had to be taken to get the course ready for the doubles racing. So watch out for 5 red buoys floating around with club or marathon names on them. Otherwise the weekend event went off really well.
Wednesday night I was at the presentation that Andy Griffith gave on paddling and rafting on the Grand Canyon. It was a great insight to what happens on the river, the beauty, the rapids and the variety of amazing walking trips up the smaller canyons. Are you ready for such an adventure!
Don't forget the team boat race April 25th 5.00pm.
David Burdett, Harry Langley and Nina Mueller have been selected for the Australian Wildwater Senior Team this year and are hosting a fundraiser event to help them get to this years
international events held in Macedonia, Italy and Spain!
The team boat race will involve random selection of teams to race in doubles/K3/K4 (teams and start list will be announced a few days prior to race day). Please arrive early to allow enough time
to get your team boat sorted!
Race start will be 5:00pm at Ascot Kayak Club.
Happy Easter.
Remember don't eat too much chocolate!
Below are the WA paddlers who are competing at the Australian Championships in South Australia next week.
