Down River Paddling Around the Buoys
We have one more Friday morning training session left in the Summer Series.
We also have one more Monday Evening race on the 30th Jan at Sandy Beach Reserve at 5.15pm.
And a Sunday morning Race.
A lot of paddlers much have celebrated Australia Day as there were a lot less paddlers at training this morning.
Today was the first time that Mark Pracilio tried kayak paddling. He usually paddles a surf ski so it was a new experience for him. He found it much more difficult that paddling a boat with a rudder. But after one or two more
sessions he will have developed new skills and be able to chase the faster paddlers with a lot more speed.
It is great to see new paddlers and surf ski paddlers try kayak paddling.
Kate Crossing was in the same position as Mark a year or so ago but practising around the buoys has advanced her skills that she now paddles the Avon River in a kayak with confidence.
Kirsten Cambell has certainly improved a lot since paddling the wavehopper.
Chris Hollier is leading the wavehopper series.
Peter Liddle trying out Kris Smith's new Wild Water Kayak.
Back in 2022 Josh Kippin and Casey Haynes (NSW) competed in the World Cup Marathon in Prague. Josh said it was a great hit out with 50 boats on the MK1 start line, so it was a very big competitive race! It was nice
to have a chance to get calibrated ahead of World Champs that was coming up in a few months time.
Josh finished 11th in the marathon and Casey was 30th. The conditions were absolutely freezing, I think it was warmer in Perth in autumn, than in Prague in spring!
It was a bit crowded amongst the best in the world.
Josh moving up in the pack.
Josh in a good position away from most of the paddlers.
Josh
finished up coming 11th.

In
the World Short Course K1 final Josh was 20th.
In the 2022 World Marathon Championships Josh came 13th.
Don't forget to register for the upcoming national events to secure your spot on the start line
2023 Oceania and PA Canoe Marathon and SUP Flatwater Championships (7-9 April)
Birds Along The Way
I met up with this Night Heron just up the Helena River, a branch of the Swan River.
With the high tide it's possible to paddle about 1km up it.
Two years ago before the bank was cleared by a landowner opposite Fishmarket Reserve Boat Ramp there used to be dozens of the Night Herons in the vegetation and trees - now you would find it hard to see one.
After a few months away from its nest on Ron Courtney Island I captured this photo on Sunday night. So hopefully the pair are back on the island for good and will be whistling again for all to hear..
On Saturday evening I captured this Osprey near the western entrance to Ascot Waters.
On Sunday night I met up with this Osprey on Kuljak Island (Ascot Waters) opposite Bath Street, Reserve, Maylands.
On Monday morning I came across this Osprey opposite Pickering Park, Bassendean.
Grey Teal Duck.
