Two young Spoonbills have hatched.

Paddle WA Awards 

It was a honour to receive the 
Paddle WA 'Master Paddler of the Year'. 

It had been a busy year for me.

I paddled 14,000 kms and raised $17,500.00 for the 
Prostate Cancer Foundation 

I also won the:-

• Australian Wild Water Championships in the 65 year + - 1st.
• WA Wild Water Championships in the 65 year + - 1st.
  Wild Water Series Champion in the 65+ (6 Races) -1st.
• WA Marathon Championships in the 70+ K1 & K2 - 1st.
  Australia Masters Canoe Marathon Champion 70+ K1 - 1st
• WA Slalom Champion 1st C1 in Masters and 3^rd K1 in the 65+
• I won many of the local races in my age group.
• I organised the 2022 Australian Masters Games Kayak Marathon which was a two day event.
• I'm on the Board of ‘Paddle WA’ .
  I'm on the WA Canoe/Kayak Marathon Committee.
• I organise paddling sessions for Ascot Kayak Club.
• I run a skills course for the WA Wild Water Committee for 8 weeks in January/February. Once a week.
• I paddled the Avon Descent again this year making it my 29th.
• I put out this Paddling Newsletter every Friday. So far I have put together 771 newsletters. 50 newsletters this year.
• I have been an Australian Flat Water, White Water and Senior Sea Instructor for 46 years and continue to pass on my knowledge.
  And I took a lot of bird photos.....

The Nominees Were

Rosalie Evans – Paddle WA Life Member 

It gave me great pleasure to nominate Rosalie Evans for a 
Paddle WA Life Membership and give her the award.

I think the first time I met Rosalie was up near Olive Farm. She was with a girl friend and they were paddling 415s and getting ready to compete in the Avon Descent for the first time. After that she got hooked into paddling and the administration of paddling and never looked back. 

Rosalie started paddling at the age of 45, around 1997 and soon after joined the Ascot Kayak Club.

She was on the Wild Water discipline committee for five years, before taking on the role of secretary of the Ascot Kayak Club for 8 years, 2000 – 2008.  She became a Life Member of Ascot Kayak Club in 2009.

In 2008 Rosalie became the President of Canoeing Western Australia (Paddle WA) and was in that role until 2011.

In 2012 Rosalie was appointed the executive officer of Paddle WA and has been overseeing paddling in WA ever since. (2012-2022)

Her duties also include representing WA at National level and going to a multiple amount of meetings with government agencies and other agencies relating to the sport.

Rosalie is also an accomplished paddler and her enthusiasm and devotion to the sport of kayaking over the last 25 years has been truly outstanding.

Paddling down south is pretty relaxing.

Several years ago dolphins were common in the upper reaches of the Swan River but nowadays its less common so when I see them it is truly special.

At the end of Monday night training a mother or it could have been the father and a young calf swam passed Ascot about 6.30pm heading upstream.

It was getting a little dark when I tried to get photos. 

The calf kept leaving the side of the adult to try to catch its own fish. It was so cute and fun watching it.

Progressive Racing Group

23 paddlers were at Tuesday PRG training.

First time racing Jason on the Spirit CTR paddles hard to reach the finish line before other paddlers that were started a little later.

The finish was tight yet again. 

If you would like to have a go at racing come and join our group.

Paddlers are sent off depending on level of experience.

 Ljubljana's Kayak Marathon 

Look at all the Wild Water Kayaks

I wonder how many wild water kayaks can WA muster for a unique race.

More than 100 competitors.

There was an excellent turn-up to the K4 regatta. There were so many paddlers they were short of K4s and there were 17 K4s on the water.

This regatta is becoming very popular.

It was certainly a sad day when I closed my Canoeing Down Under shop.

We made lots of friends and it was such an enjoyable job.

Birds Along The Way

Rainbow Bee eater

They are back for summer.

Rainbow Bee-eaters gather in small flocks before returning to summer breeding areas after over-wintering in the north (apart from the resident northern populations). Both males and females select a suitable nesting site in a sandy bank and dig a long tunnel (average length: 89.4 cm) leading to a nesting chamber, which is often lined with grasses. Both parents incubate the eggs and both feed the young, sometimes with the assistance of auxiliaries (helpers).
