Well there is a lot of paddling going on this week especially if you are a Down Wind Paddler with 4-5 Shaw & Partners races in one week. For people not paddling in the Rottnest to Sorrento race it will be a spectacle to see all 500 competitors hit the beach at Sorrento on Saturday Afternoon. Tasmania
Tom Norton seems to be doing very well in the 3 races that have been run, winning two of them and coming second in the Fenn West Coast Downwinder. There is some tough competition out there.

Paddle for Lymphoma Local paddler Matt Hutchinson has planned to paddle 585 kilometres, 45 kms every day for 13 days, and raise $5000.00 for lymphoma. He has now paddled 431.2 km but not all has gone to plan. After months and months of training, and with 320km to go his left shoulder packed it in. He couldn’t manage to paddle 12 km one morning and he had trouble lifting his left arm. So there was a visit or two to the physio and unfortunately he had to stop paddling for a few days. But he is back and his plan has now changed so he will now extend the period and finish on November 30th and paddle 20km a day before and after work. If you would like to donate to his cause - go here: See why he is doing this below.
Matt Hutchinson Paddle for Cheryl and Lymphoma ActionI will paddle the equivalent of the Hong Kong Around the Island race (45km) per day for every year I’ve known Cheryl. I first met Cheryl through paddling in Hong Kong 13 years ago. Since then both paddling and Cheryl have been a
massive part of mine and my families lives. Cheryl has been diagnosed with Central Nervous System Lymphoma, which accounts for only 1% of all brain tumours diagnosed. Prognosis and treatments have greatly improved in recent years, but research continues on how best to tackle the disease. Your money will greatly help the work of this great charity to improve diagnosis speed, treatments and aftercare. Cheryl is, and will continue to go through a lot as she works through this so I’ve decided to work through a lot too with her. As both paddling and Hong Kong have been such a big part of our lives for so long this challenge seemed to fit. I will paddle the equivalent distance of the Hong Kong Around The Island Race (~45 km) every day for 13 days, finishing on Nov. 18. Lymphoma Action is the UK’s only charity dedicated to lymphoma, the fifth most common cancer. We’ve been providing in-depth, expert information and wide-ranging support for over 30 years, helping thousands of people affected by lymphoma. We’re here for everyone affected by lymphoma. https://lymphoma-action.org.uk/
It was extremely windy but that didn't deter 23 paddlers on Tuesday evening. 11 of those paddlers were women.

River Race.

we wait with anticipation and hope that no one will mess with the sand bar holding the water back at Moore River so to keep the water level high. Some years it is breached and the water in the river runs out leaving the water level being very shallow. This year it didn’t disappoint as the weather was good, the sand bar was intact and the river was high, so we didn’t have to paddle in shallow water. It was the mixed doubles championships with 19 mixed teams and 42 other paddlers like myself in singles. The first grid off were the doubles, then div 1 and div 2 combined
before our mob in div 3 took off. Beside me were Alastair Fox on my left and Andrew Storey, who I didn’t really know on my right. The first few hundred metres became a real fight. Robin Jacob, Jayden O’Brien and Chris Hollier were beside Alastair and Erica McKnight was on the other side of Andrew. Within three hundred metres the squeeze was on as all paddlers came together. I held my ground between Alastair and Andrew but we constantly clashed paddles and as no one wanted to give any ground or
move apart the gap between us got even narrower so our paddles clashed even more. I have never been in a race with so many paddle clashes. By the 500 metre mark I usually start to feel good and increase my pace which I did. My extra speed seemed to work as some of the paddlers started dropping
off our wash including Alastair but I couldn’t get rid of Andrew beside me or Erica, who was on my tail. With a bit more freedom there was no clashing of paddles. As we had broke away my main aim was to keep a distance between me and Alastair, Robin and Jayden. I also wanted to get Erica
off my back wash but even when I put in a few spurts she was still there. Erica is a strong lady, she lifts weights, I think in competitions and works out in the gym. At one point she did shout out and asked if I wanted her to take the lead so Andrew and I could wash ride her, but it was too risky for me to allow that, as it would mean I would have to slow down and let her come up and hand over the lead. I just wanted to keep at the front, especially as we had an island with a couple of logs to
go around coming up and a pack of wolves chasing not far behind. We eventually passed a double and caught up with Lilly Farrell, who started off on grid 2. So now I had Lilly, who had found a lot more energy on my left side and Andrew who wasn’t
giving up and paddling strong on my right. At times I fell back a little to wash ride Andrew and Lilly for a few minutes but I made sure I was in the the lead well before the island turn, to dictate the turn which I did.

At the turn I notice a paddler on the bank on my right and a junior pair trying to get back in their K2 on the tip of the island. I was wondering if they had tried to go over the submerged part of the log and hit their rudder. I accelerated once around the island to see if I could lose Andrew and Erica which I did for a few seconds but very soon they were back and so was Lilly. So it looked as if the race was going to be won or lost on the final kilometre where I knew I would have to step it up. But as luck should have it Peter
Pawlow, who must have been the paddler on the bank, came flying passed. I picked my time and when he was suitably in front I sprinted hard to get onto his rear wash and leaving the others behind. My devious un-sportingly plan worked as I started to pull away from Andrew, Lilly and Erica and the double of Cynthia & Steve Coward who had latched onto us when we were passing them. As Peter pulled away at a fast pace I worked really hard to keep on his tail. That worked well for about 500 metres or so but he was just a tad too fast for me and the fact that I had left the others behind by a good margin I didn’t feel too bad when I lost his wash. But I knew I couldn’t just loll around or the others would
work together to catch me up so I worked hard to keep them at bay and the closer I got to the finish the happier I became. About 1km out Martin & Anne were getting back into their K2. Apparently they had capsized after clashing paddles with another K2. They were soon chasing me and caught me at the last bend but I had no desire to allow them to beat me so I just went for it and managed to cross the line just before them. Although I felt a little guilty for using Peter to leave the others behind I was still pretty happy that I managed to beat Andrew and Erica by 50 seconds. Robin and Alastair were only a few seconds behind them so if I hadn’t have got a wash ride it would have been an interesting finish. I will have to watch all 4 of them in the future. I was hoping to do a similar time to John Hilton who I had beaten in the Ascot race twice by a second or two but he beat me by nearly 2 minutes in this race so that brought me back to earth so it meant I still had a lot of work to do. He had walked to the Everest Base Camp and had covid a few weeks earlier
so he is not at his best yet. To warm down I paddled back upstream to meet all the div 4 paddlers who were still on the course. Then it was presentations. Being a Mixed Doubles Championships all the winners got medals in each age category.
