It’s been a busy year for me. I have taken part in the WA Marathon
Champs, Australian Masters Marathon, Australian Wild Water Champs, WA Wild Water Champs and last week the WA Slalom Champs. This week I will be competing at the Sprint Regatta in C1 and giving Cameron Jones a challenge. Oh I forgot
I also paddled 14,000kms this year.
Can you believe that in 1977 / 78 the cost for entering the Avon Descent was $10.00 non refundable.

Last Friday as I had finished my training session I talked to Sam who I keep seeing on the water but we are always going in different directions. I asked him what distance had he planned for the day. To
Barkers Bridge and Back, he said and before I let him finish I thought to myself well that’s just an ordinary day for many paddlers but then he finished off saying 4 times. Now that is a paddle. That’s over 45kms. I returned later for lunch at the kiosk and he was just coming in for lunch after his second lap. At training that evening Sam was just finishing his 4th lap. He was going to be 45 years old on Sunday so he thought he would paddle 45 kilometres.
Sam at the finish of his 45 kilometre paddle. He was 45 years old on Sunday. I better watch out he will be wanting to out do me and paddle 14,000kms soon.
This November Matt Hutchinson will be paddling 45km a day for 13 days (585km total) to try and raise money for
Lymphoma Action. They're a charity who have been helping his good friend while she has been fighting through Central Nervous System Lymphoma. He will be aiming to do a single 45km session each day, but a maximum of 2 x 22.5km paddles (or 4x Drummers Run's if the wind is good. Any support would be greatly appreciated. Matt.
Progressive Racing Group I know the weather hasn't been the best but spring should be here soon so
why not come down to Ascot on Tuesday evening at 5.00pm and take part in the handicapped race.
Isabel Combe keeping ahead of the faster paddlers.
Josh Richards and Michael Liddle passing Manny Carabott.
Wendy & Ross Burdett. On the Swan at Redcliffe Tuesday evening.
On the Canning River on Tuesday evening. Steve and Cindy Coward. The Canning River was a little bit rougher than the Swan at Redcliffe last Tuesday evening.
WA Slalom Championships The WA State Slalom Championships were held last Sunday and unlike the week before the weather conditions were perfect. The water level was even higher than the week before so the current was quick which made getting some of the gates pretty
difficult. Our junior stand outs were - Connor Jacob (14), Rhys MacRae (13), Beau Jacob (11), Izzy Florisson (12) and Jimmy Aitchison (12). It's sad to say that
12 year old Izzy beat me in the K1 class by 1 second and all the other juniors also beat me except for Jimmy who was 1 second behind me, but please don't tell anyone. Looks as if I need to do a lot more slalom training if I’m ever going to beat the young ones now. Connor also beat his coaches so he would be pleased. George Pankhurst won the K1 with Genie Collin who arrived from a flight from Europe the day prior taking second spot and Cody Pope coming third. George won the C1 class with Genie second and Nina third pushing Hunter in 4th place. This meant I came 5th in the C1 class so there were no medals for me, although I was the only paddler in the masters C1. I haven’t really
paddled C1 slalom since the Harvey White Water course was closed in the 1990s but I still have a few years ahead to get back to my best!! Slalom in WA has it's ups and downs and it doesn't help when our local paddlers reach the top of their game and they have to move to Sydney, another reason why we need a White Water Course in Perth. You would have thought with all the wealthy business owners in Perth we would be able to get one of them to invest in
one. WAs Ben Pope, Brodie Crawford
and Steven Lowther, who train in Sydney are also representing Australia at the moment. It’s such a shame that our WA paddlers have to go east or overseas to get into the Australian Squad. Other WA paddlers that have had to move east in the past are Olympians, Robin Bell, Robin Jeffery and Kynan Maley. Four times Australian Slalom Champion and an Australian representative to several world championships Lindsay Binning also had to relocate to Tasmania to train on white water. Demelza Wall, Georgia
Rankin are two more paddlers that had to move interstate to become successful slalom paddlers and I’m sure there have been others. Currently our top junior paddlers
George Pankhurst, who has just returned from competing in Europe, and Hunter Florisson will inevitable be forced to move to Sydney one day if they want to represent Australia at a high level. It is such a shame that our top West Australian slalom paddlers have to move interstate to be recognised. Not only do we lose our best paddlers, but we also lose paddlers who inspire and coach our junior paddlers who have taken slalom up. It wouldn't be as bad but they also meet girls from the eastern seaboard and get married and stay over there.
14 year old Connor beat his coaches.
At 11 Beau is going to be hard to beat next year. I failed to beat him this year!!
12 year old Jimmy Aitchison has only been on the whitewater a few times and he is already a star.
Terry Bolland - well there is no hope of him getting any better!
The team of Nina Mueller, George Pankhurst and Hunter Florisson.
Genie Collin and Alex Vogel. WAs Genie Collin flew in from Europe the day before the race, where she has been living, paddling and representing Australia in slalom and wild water so it was good to see her competing at the champs and doing very well. Luke Dooley who competed in the slalom champs will be off to Portugal soon to take part in the World Marathon Championships.
The course. I found gate 2 which was in a faint eddy with a swift current each side and a tree directly behind was quite a difficult gate to execute. Then there were several staggered downstream gates that were
also challenging in the swift current.
Perth Whitewater Centre Needs Your
Help
Do you pray for rain in summer? Wishing for some white water?
Help us achieve the dream of a whitewater centre in Perth, and we could then have year-round whitewater paddling!
We first need to develop a comprehensive business case for the Perth Whitewater Centre, which can then be presented to local governments and stakeholders. These documents are expensive to produce, so we have created a fundraiser to get as much community support as possible.
Renewing WA club members will notice that there is an opportunity to donate to this project while purchasing your next membership. All members can opt-out of this, or choose how much they wish to donate. All donations over $2 are tax deductible.
Find out more in the link below, and thank you for your support! Help Make the Perth Whitewater Centre a Reality! | Paddle WA
Canning Bridges 2022 Race The 1st Canning River Canoe Club and Invitational Championship was run at the weekend. Congratulations to the winners and all who took part, volunteers and supporters. The course had it all, wide section for the start, a long deep straight off the start. tight turns and the odd shallow water. This made for great strategic racing through the whole field.

Mackenzie Hynard Now that was on hell of an experience. Whack The Wave Pahang International Ocean Challenge Malaysia. A five day multi staged event with cumulative timed deciding the winner along with stage winners each day. We were all paddling plastic 5.10m boats weighing 22kg in mostly flat, hot and humid
conditions. It was brutal to say the least. We had a great duel up the front with Dawid
Mocke & Kent Jenkinson with podium positions changing each day. I finish up in third spot overall and managed to get a stage win on the 3rd day. I Absolutely loved the experience, paddling in new places and adventuring with old and new friends It’s fair to say this is best event organisation I have ever been apart of. Could not recommend this event more for anyone thinking of going next year. Thank you Tourism Pahang & Tourism Malaysia and mostly the event organisers for getting behind a sport like ocean paddling and helping it grow in a new part of the
world!

Well this is a wave Benny Marr takes off. Photo Dan Sutherland
“….that launching shot off cheese wave, Benny was pretty tired and sore cause it was getting late in stake out. He just had a massive day
before surfing the wave in his carbon boat. He said he will just do a few launches, but he wasn’t happy with how high he was getting ( it was the most air I had seen off a wave). So he did a few more then he said ok one more.. then I wanted to try get one more angle so, I asked him if he could do one more again! Then he wasn’t happy with it! So in the end, he did about 10 laps after he said 1 more walking up each time. Its not hard to see how he got so good when he’s putting in that many laps
even when he’s sore and exhausted.” - Words and Image by Dan Sutherland.

From My Diary August 7th 1990 Canning Stock Route I thought I would be rejoicing at the end of my 1600 kilometre walk along the Canning Stock Route but as I drew closer to the end after walking another 60 km day I reflected on the beautiful scenes, experiences and the days of being
in deep thought. I was leaving large stands of beautiful white gums, bloodwood forests, huge areas of high golden spinifex, restored wells, rock holes, salt lakes, dingoes and hundreds of sand ridges. Not only was I leaving a commercial free area where a clock means nothing, where
crime doesn’t exist and where I only left footprints but I will be leaving the quietness, the splendour and stillness of the desert. Tomorrow I would be covering new territory this time by mountain bike, my backside taking the full brunt of the notorious rough corrugations of the 850 km Tanami Track and then to walk across the Simpson
Desert.
Grasses blowing in the wind.
A Dingo followed me for several hours.
