Paddling for Prostate

Paddling 7000kms in my 70th Birthday Year.

It was meant to take 12 months but tomorrow I would have paddled the 7000 kms in just under 7 months.

70 years old, 7000 kms, 7 months.

After many 50.00 kms days I now only have 41.97 kms left to reach the 7000 km target. So with tomorrow mornings big paddle I will only have a few kilometres to paddle tomorrow night (Wednesday).

So if you have nothing on and you would like to paddle with me across that 7000 km target I will be paddling that last 5 kms heading upstream from Ascot Kayak Club at 5.30pm this Wednesday evening (29^th December).

Although I will have paddled 7000 kms in less than 7 months, paddling every day since June 3rd, I still haven't finished my challenge. I will keep paddling 20kms every day until June 2nd 2022.

Imagine paddling from Perth to Sydney and back and then paddling from Perth to Albany and back and then imagine that you have paddled all those kilometres on the same 20 kilometre stretch of the Swan River for 7000 kms taking 7 months.

It was exciting to find two Swamphen families with chicks this week.

It is going to be great to see them grow up.

The purple swamphen chick is ready to leave the nest and live independently after about two or three days of hatching. They start roaming the river banks or marshes in search of food.

Nearly 7000kms in 7 months

only 50kms to go.

Yesterday (Tuesday) morning on the Helena River.
I have been paddling 50 kms nearly every day for the last two weeks.

Before then it was 45 kms.

Last week I paddled 343.11 kms.

Yesterday (Tuesday) morning when it got hotter.

I don't know if you have noticed but it has been hot.

Ron is a bit of a dark horse. Because of his work he generally trains alone so others don't know how fast he is. When it comes to the Avon Descent he is still up there.

My Famous Nordkapp Kayak

is looking for a new home.

It has been places.

It has spent 9 months paddling in the Kimberley Region.

It's been hit by sharks, chased by crocodiles, buried for six months and seen a lot of tidal white water.

It has been my home for years.

I gave my Nordkapp to John Snowball a few years ago.

Now he has a new sea kayak and he wants to give this famous kayak to someone who will treasure it.
I made it for the rugged Kimberley conditions so it is pretty heavy. Just over 35 kilograms I guess.

John Snowball has had some good times paddling the kayak.

Purple Swamphen

These birds are known to be monogamous in nature. However, in some cases, females mate with more than one purple swamphen male. Breeding can take place any time of the year but mainly occurs from July to December. The female purple swamphens lay around three to six eggs in its nest. The family members of these purple gallinule, the young from previous breeding, share in incubation and care of the young. The males do not help throughout the incubation period as the females mate with several males. The nest consists of a platform of trampled reeds and vegetation, which sometimes, have been used to form a shelter. Generally, two young ones are raised in a year in a nest made of reeds and shoots by the family members.

The diet of the Purple Swamphen includes the soft shoots of reeds and rushes and small animals, such as frogs and snails. However, it is a reputed egg stealer and will also eat ducklings when it can catch them. The Purple Swamphen uses its long toes to grasp food while eating.

The Purple Swamphen feeds in a strange way, using its long toes. It feeds while walking if it is protected, along the muddy area close to the reeds.
The food is taken with one leg, mainly the right leg. The food items are held between the toes and raised until half of height separating them from the bill.

Australian Ravens are black with white eyes in adults. The feathers on the throat (hackles) are longer than in other species, and a bird tends to extend these when calling, while holding its head and body in a horizontal position.
